Today the GSPCA celebrates 147 years since the day we were founded.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manage said “On the 14th February 1873 a group of concerned islanders identified there was a need to prevent animal cruelty and promote kindness and this gave birth to the GSPCA.”
“147 years later we continue to strive towards the same goals we were founded on all those years ago and although many things have changed our aims and objectives are as relevant today as they were so long ago.”
“Saying this the world has moved on in many ways but we continue to educate and promote kindness but there is still cruelty and we work very closely with the authorities when cases arise.”
“We are very lucky that the vast majority care very much for animals in Guernsey and this is certainly demonstrated with islanders helping rescue over 2000 wild animals and over 1000 domestic animals for various reasons which come through our doors every year.”
“This week hundreds of Islanders have being getting involved with our annual #GSPCAPurpleWeek for over 40 children from La Hougette Primary School having a tour of the Animal Shelter to Les Voies students being shown around and taking photos for their photography course.”
“Around 30 Donkey Linedancers donned purple and danced raising over £130 and schools have been getting involved dressing in purple.”
“Islanders have been getting involved in all sorts of ways and donations continue to come in to support the around clock work that we do and help towards the 500 animals in our care including Pebbles the new seal pup and Spike a hedgehog that arrived last night.”
“With such a long history we have to always strive to look to the future and our biggest plan currently is the real need to know 6 old buildings down to make way for a new Wildlife Hospital to ensure we have facilities for future generations.”
“We continue to try and raise funds to build a new Wildlife Hospital and to help towards this much needed facility please check out this link http://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/gspca-launch-buy-brick-proposed-new-wildlife-hospital .”
“To find out more about our amazing history please visit https://www.gspca.org.gg/about where you can learn about lion cubs to turtles, penguins to of course the more commonly know animal stories.”
"A huge thanks to all that have been involved with #GSPCAPurpleWeek and there is still time to get involved and support our work with lots of ideas online or please do pop in or call to find out more."
