As the days get longer and the temperature rises the weather is just right for some of our prickly Winter residents to head back to the wild.
Pumpkin the hedgehog was found by Michelle Johansen near Ville au Roi last November at only 330g which would have meant she wouldn't have survived the Winter.
Parsnip was found early December at only 356g in a similar area by Michelle.
Both hedgehogs have spent the Winter at the GSPCA and with the weather just right and Pumpkin up to 960g and Parsnip at 872g they have both reached more than needed in weight to be released.
Before releasing them they were microchipped and Michelle Johansen came in to collect them earlier this week.
Annie Janes Animal Care Assistant said "We see around 400 hedgehogs a year come through our Hedgehog Department at the GSPCA and during the Winter they really struggle."
"With the weather being so mild it means they find it difficult to hibernate and they struggle to find food through the Winter months."
"If Parsnip and Prickles hadn't been rescued then they would have surely died as they were really emaciated when they arrived at the GSPCA."
"We love to release the hedgehogs where they were found if it is safe and it was lovely to see Michelle Johansen again and pass her the hedgehogs that she rescued so they can be released back in their home area."
"We have a page full of advice on our website if you find a sick or ill hedgehog or you can always call us on 257261."
"It won't be long before we see orphaned and baby hedgehogs which are called hoglets and if ever you need any hedgehog advice please do give us a call."
"We are always looking for sponsors to help support our work and also food and honey for the hedgehogs."
"We wish Parsnip and Prickles the best of luck and if they ever do find their way back we will know as they are now microchipped."
