From a bunny boom to a guinea pig bonanza the Animal Shelter is now inundated with over 20 rabbits, guinea pigs and rats in need of a good home.

From strays, unwanted litters and those that cannot be cared for due to an owner’s change of circumstances or welfare reasons the Shelter is literally bursting with these little animals looking for new homes.

Just last night another stray rabbit was found wandering and we urge any owners that lose their pets to ensure they register their details with the Shelter as we have stray animals brought in every day.

Pictured is Poppy who is one of the many guinea pigs at the Shelter who needs a loving new home.  These little rodents originally from Peru can make excellent pets as they are very friendly but do need space and time.

With Spring fast approaching and the weather improving please consider making a large run in your garden and adopting one of these animals from the Shelter rather than going out and buying one.

We do try and lead and house train our rabbits so if you haven’t got an outside space then we may still have one suitable.  For house rabbits we do encourage owners to grow trays of grass and foliage to ensure they get a balanced diet.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager said ‘We can’t make runs fast enough to house all of these lovely animals.’  ‘As quickly as we rehome one we seem to get another two.’  ‘Please if you are looking for a pet rabbit or guinea pig visit the Shelter as we have some fantastic characters.’  ‘Sahara has been here the longest but my favourite has to be Hawthorn the black bunny that loves to follow you and if you stand still fall asleep on your feet.’

If you can help rehome a bunny, guinea pig or are looking for any kind of pet please call the  Animal Shelter on 01481 257261 or see www.gspca.org.gg/animals

"I have 4 guniea pigs. We have gone threw about 20 in the past 19 years. The best thing to do for a guniea pig is let the run in the grass. They absolutely love it!!! You can set them in the back yard and let them run. They get to eat all the grass they want (wich is verry good for them. They need it to clean there bodies), run and strech there legs, they get fresh air, and it's clean. If you can't let them free you can take the top of there cage and set it in the grass and put them in there. Just make sure they have shade, they can die of heat stroke if you leave them in the dead sun.Pet balls arn't so grate for a piggy, the arnt as active as a hamster and is gross when they pee and poop in it and it's all over the house and they don't get to eat grass so theres no special treat involved. There just trapped in plastic.Hope I could help you out ^__^"
