Yesterday the GSPCA and St Andrews Floral Group were invited along to Les Cotils for the Insurance Corporation Conservation Awards.
This is the second year our joint project has entered after last year winning the Peter Walpole Peoples Choice Award after our many kind supporters voted for our project.
The room was packed with amazing people from organisations or running projects from their gardens helping the biodiversity of the Bailiwick or with plans to do more.
Michelle Arundale the HR & PR Executive from the Insurance Corporation of the Channel Islands Limited welcomed the many guests and show cased videos of the many projects across the Bailiwick.
After the VT's the winners were announced and Alderney Bird Observatory won the top prize in this year’s Insurance Corporation Conservation Awards in the Bailiwick. The project which aspires to be the newest and most southerly observatory in the British Isles wins £1500 which will be spent on the purchase of vital bird-ringing equipment including replacement ringing nets, poles and rings.
We were overwhelmed as the Runner-Up Award was given to St Andrew’s Floral Group in conjunction with the GSPCA. Which meant we have won £1000 to help renew the pond and grounds at the Animal Shelter and help attract more diverse wildlife and improve the environment for animals in care.
But it didn't stop there as thanks to our supporters and kind voters for the second year in a row The Peter Walpole People’s Choice Award (public vote) and £500 was also presented to St Andrew’s Floral Group in conjunction with the GSPCA to also help our Going Going Gone Wild conservation project.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "For two years we have been working at the GSPCA with St Andrews Floral Group who have transformed the grounds into a rich place for wildlife and plants and improvements continue almost every day."
"It was a lovely afternoon at Les Cotils with the amazing and supportive team at Insurance Corporation and we are so grateful to them as these awards really do help wildlife around the Channel Islands and making our homes a much richer place to live."
"We were so shocked to be overall runner-up and win the The Peter Walpole People’s Choice Award for the second year and the total £1500 prize fund will really help us push forward with this fantastic community project."
"From Ann and the amazing St Andrews Floral Group to the Guernsey RSPB, Guernsey Bee Keeprs to the fantastic Work to Benefit team, Cubs Groups to local businesses, schools to volunteers and all the hundreds that have helped so far we are truly blessed at the GSPCA to be at the centre of an amazing community conservation project."
Ann Wragg Group Leader from St Andrews Floral Group said "We were so amazed to win two of the awards yesterday at the Insurance Corporation Conservation Awards."
"We have so many people to thank for getting the conservation project at the GSPCA to where it is today and to the Insurance Corporation as the funds from the awards will help us do so much more to help wildlife in Guernsey."
"From all of the St Andrews Floral Guernsey team a huge thank you and anyone wanting to help with our project please do get in touch."

Here is a list of the other awards:
The Conservation Education Award and £500 – Alderney Wildlife Trust and their LIVE Education project.
The Young Conservationist of the Year Award – 3rd Guernsey Scout Group
Highly Commended Certificated and bird boxes donated by RSPB were also awarded to Alderney Wildlife Trust for their Seabird Monitoring Project, Charles Hurford for the Orchard Project at Princess Elizabeth Hospital, Joyce & Mike Hardy for the Marette de Haute Vinery Project and Enzo Crowson for his continued interest in conservation with his big hotel extension.
An Insurance Corporation representative said “Alderney is an incredible place to view a wide variety of birds, especially seabirds."
"It is also one of the least well studied so the observatory is a much-needed resource."
"The island sits on several major flyways and sees large numbers of birds from Britain and the Continent."
"Alderney can make and important contribution to scientific studies of bird populations and provide data to help protect them."
"We feel this is an extremely worthy project and a well-deserved winner of our funding.”
