On the 24th June the States of Guernsey announced their first ever Animal Health & Welfare Officer vacancy.

This is a new position in Guernsey and with eh closing date being the 5th July there is only a short window left to apply.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “The GSPCA has been investigating animal cruelty and welfare for over 151 years in Guernsey.”

“From illegally transported puppies to reptile cruelty sadly we do get involved with cruelty cases in Guernsey each year and investigate an average 1000 causes of concern each year.”

“Back in 2013 the Animal Welfare Ordinance 2012 was brought in and there have been recent updates of other animal welfare law changes last month.”

“This position is very much welcomed and at the GSPCA we look forward in finding out more about how this post will better help animal welfare in Guernsey and no doubt how we can work together to help the animals and our community in Guernsey.”

“In just over a decade we have seen the growth of staff in regards animal welfare go from a States Vet from a local practice develop into a full time position over a decade ago, to a second full time States Vet 3 years ago and now this new position.”

“We have also seen the RSPCA Assured scheme adopted for the dairy farmers to ensure good welfare in our farms.”

“Many parts of the 2012 Animal Welfare Ordinance are yet to have been enacted such as licencing of animal businesses from pet shops to boarding establishments.”

“At the GSPCA we are part of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes and have had our inspection at the end of last year which is part of being a member of an organisation of nearly 180 members to ensure we work the standards seen across the animal welfare sector.”

“The main animal welfare issues we constantly are asked to assist in Guernsey range from horrendous cruelty such as large numbers of rabbits kept in far from ideal living conditions to escaped farm animals and horses which we are asked to assist and pose a real danger to themselves, the public and to our team who day and night go out to do what they can.”

“Another challenge is with the lack of microchip laws in Guernsey reuniting strays can be difficult especially with the 150 to 200 cats killed on our roads each year.”

“Sadly only 80% of cats are chipped and many don’t have up to date owner information which can cause a challenge trying to track down an owner.”

“When we investigate cruelty, neglect or concerns many can be resolved with some advice but when we come across serious concerns we work very closely with agencies such as the Police, Customs and States Vets and each year there are very serious cases that can reach the courts.”

“We recently cam across a publication from 1876 which explains how we use to ask the public to report animal welfare concerns If anyone has any concerns in regards animal welfare you can call us on 257261 as we continue to investigate and help animals in need.”
