Yesterday the States of Guernsey issued the following on their facebook media channel -
‘To retrieve the grey squirrel which has been spotted in the island, the States Veterinary Officer has asked a local pest controller to set up traps where it has been seen most recently.
We’d kindly ask islanders not to gather where the squirrel has been sighted as this will make the pest controller’s job more difficult.
No decision has been made yet about what the next steps will be if the squirrel is safely caught, however, every avenue will be explored to try to return the squirrel to a more suitable environment.’
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Yesterday the States of Guernsey issued a statement in regards their attempt to capture as many call one of our newest visitors ‘Cyril the Sarnian Squirrel’.”
“In trying to catch any animal it is always best to avoid the area where the animal is as not to scare it into moving from where it may have settled as this can cause challenges and additional stress to the animal involved.”
“The GSPCA will always be there to help or advise with any animal in need as we are for Maxillion the Maderian Wall Lizard who is doing well.”
“If there is any chance that Cyril the Sarnian Squirrel can be repatriated or allowed to find a permanent home then we are here to help if needed.”
“We are fast moving into Spring and starting to see young animals and birds being orphaned and for those looking for advice please check out https://www.gspca.org.gg/animals/wildlife-advice or call us on 257261.”
“It is also very busy as we prepare for our BIGGEST BUILD which includes putting up new aviaries and enclosures away from the location this will be built”
“The main part of this build is the first ever Wildlife Hospital in the Channel islands.”
