Last week the GSPCA did not have 1 but 2 calls to rescue snakes that managed to travel the huge distance to Guernsey.
On the 18th May GSPCA team member Neil Hughes was called out to a local Garden Centre kitchen where a snake had stowed away with cabbages from Spain.
Tiny Tim as the very small snake has been called is a Viperine Snake which does have venom for their prey but they do not bite as a form of defence and even if it did would be harmless to humans.
3 days prior to Tiny Tim coming in we were called out to a local property where the owners had been on holiday to Mexico.
When they were unpacking it appears that a sake decided to travel with them and relocate to a different continent.
Max as the very small tiny snake has been named is what we believe a Salmon Bellied Racer.
He has already proved slippery than most as he is currently hiding from us in the quarantine area he is being kept.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Each year the States of Guernsey or public contact us with unusual animals to hold or quarantine that have managed to smuggle themselves into our shores but to get two in a week is very unusual.”
“Tiny Tim a Viperine Snake was the first and is a Salmon Bellied Racer which is our first ever animal arrive from Mexico and is not venimous thankfully.”
“Tiny Tim does have venom glands but it is only used in paralysing their very small prey and is said to be harmless to humans and they rarely bite in defence.”
“Man is a little bigger longer than Tiny Tim and he is from Spain and managed to sneak in with cabbages and surprised the kitchen team where he was found in a local Garden Centre.”
“We are keeping both in a quarantine area but it is looking likely we will be able to rehome both snakes but it will need to be to experienced reptile owners that have the correct setups for their care.”
“We often have reptiles looking for homes and anyone interested in adopting any animal then please do get in touch or check out the procedures online.”
“It is amazing to think of all the different species we have helped over our 150 year history from lion cubs to tiny snakes and to support our work during this momentous year check out https://www.gspca.org.gg/page/gspca-celebrating-150-year .”
