Despite last years event being cancelled this is the ninth year in a row the GSPCA are attending the West Show which will be held on Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th August 2021.

Many may know Pongo the diabetic cat who arrived at the GSPCA during the first lock down.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Pongo has been at the GSPCA for over a year and might know him as he has been into the studios at BBC Guernsey and also featured in a calendar this year which is on sale across the UK from the ADCH.”
“All of the team think the world of Pongo and although there has been some interest due to the costs of food and treatment many were a little put off giving him a good home.”

The last 18 months have been incredibly difficult for many businesses, as it has for charities.
The GSPCA would normally raise around 50% of its income through pet boarding and other services but due to 2 lock downs and travel restrictions it has been extremely difficult for the Animal Shelter to raise the £2,000 a day its costs to care for the 1,000’s of animals that come through the doors every year.
As with any organisation the GSPCA requires a system to record and process transactions from donations to sales and pet boarding.

This week GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne celebrates a decade working for the GSPCA.
Steve came to the GSPCA after 15 years with the RSPCA having worked in various management roles in England and Wales and was the youngest ever manager being 18 years as a Deputy Manager and then 21 when he was running the 72 acre RSPCA Llys Nini Animal Centre in South Wales.
During his 10 years at the GSPCA we have been through many exciting times and been celebrated in many ways and we posed a few questions to Steve to reflect on his time –

The GSPCA along with the RSPCA, Battersea Dogs’ Home, and the Kennel Club (to name a few) supports a review of the Dangerous Dog Act 1991 and all breed specific legislation and policies. However, sadly most welfare campaigners believe DEFRA will be unlikely to want to backtrack on this outdated Legislation that has now been in place for 30 years.

The GSPCA couldn’t achieve so much without our dedicated trained staff and we currently recruiting for casual staff, especially for those available during weekends and bank holidays.
There are two roles which we are currently in need of staff that being Casual Receptionist and Casual Animal Care. It is preferable if applicants have a driving licence , but not necessarily essential at this time.

On Friday at St James Concert Hall Dan Ashplant released his album ‘No Nonsense’.
At the event he also raised funds for the GSPCA which we are hugely grateful for.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Last Friday Dan Ashplant launched his album No Nonsense and also raised funds for the GSPCA.”
“I chatted to Dan on Monday when he dropped the donation in and he said it was a great night and raised over £74 to help the 100’s of animals in our care.”

On Sunday the GSPCA were at the Classic Car Show thanks to Tim, James and Beckie and we want to thank those that organised and all that supported our stall.
Tim Pellet GSPCA Training and Community Officer said “We had a great day at the Classic Car Show on Sunday and raised an amazing £530.”
“Beckie and James helped me with the stall and we saw so many wonderful supporters and lots of dogs as well.”
“We even saw some of the dogs that have been adopted from the GSPCA.”

Situations Recruitment are delighted to have purchased 4 new fridge freezers for the GSPCA, which are vital for the charity to provide quality food and support to the animals in their care.
Melissa, MD at Situations, said “I spotted the GSPCA’s appeal on LinkedIn recently for new white goods and straight away we wanted to support them.”
“We are donating the fridges in memory of our colleague Debbie’s dear dog Roxy (shown in this post), who sadly passed away last month after a long and happy life with Debbie.”
