Peter the young kestrel rescued, reared, rung and released

Submitted by Steve on 16:12, 1st Aug, 2015 | 0

On the 26th June a very young, starving kestrel was found on a road in St Peters.

With no mother in site and traffic back and forth the bird was rescued and brought to the GSPCA in St Andrews.

He was placed in an intensive care unit and still had much of his down and not fully feathered due to his age.

Day and night he was hand fed by the team at the Shelter until he was fit enough to place in one of our rehabilitation aviaries.

Over the last few weeks he has built his strength and learnt to fly and forage for food.

GSPCA Domestic Birds Move Outside for the First Time

Submitted by Steve on 13:19, 1st Aug, 2014 | 0

Today we are pleased to announce that domestic birds that come in for rehoming now have a lovely aviary with a view to live in and stretch their wings.

With the new animal welfare legislation now a month after coming into force and the GSPCA striving to lead an example in animal care four birds today moved into their new home.

The wooden framed aviary welcomed two budgies and two cockatiels who are at the Shelter in need of a home.

Cockatiels Rosie and Jim were the first to fly up onto the perches, closely followed by Peter and Paula the budgies.

Submitted by GSPCA on 16:38, 23rd Sep, 2013 | 0

The GSPCA would like to thank everyone that turned out for the Reservoir Sponsored Dog Walk yesterday with Sidney's Events.

Nearly 30 dogs and walkers arrived at Rue des Anvilles car park to walk the 3 miles of pathes around the Reservoir.

Some in fancy dress and all with smiles, the group of walkers with tiny dogs like Jack Russels and Pugs to German Shepherds and Red Setters all had a lovely walk, with beautiful scenery, enjoying each others company whilst raising funds to help animals in Guernsey.

Could you help the GSPCA in helping animals find new homes?

You may already have pets or aren't able to but here is a way that you can help those feathered and furry friends find a new home.

We always have animals looking for new homes and the link below is a link to just a small selection.

Why not place a poster up at your work or local shop and help spread the word of those animals needing new homes in Guernsey.

Wildlife Advice With The Windy Start To 2012

Submitted by GSPCA on 20:19, 4th Jan, 2012 | 1

The start of 2012 has already brought the Animal Shelter a number of sick and injured animals & birds from around the island but with the continuation of the windy weather we are asking everyone to keep a good look out.

The bad weather means it is difficult for hedgehogs and birds to feed normally and the young seal pups can easily be separated from their mothers.

Submitted by GSPCA on 17:25, 26th Oct, 2011 | 2

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Feed the Birds Day takes place on Saturday 29 October 2011.

This special day reminds us about all the things we can do to help birds and other garden wildlife through the winter.

Birds really need your help as the clocks go back and the nights draw in. This year the GSPCA would like to encourage everyone to ‘Come Dine with the Birds’ and host your own wildlife garden party.
