Yesterday a medium sized grey cross breed dog called Dora went missing in the Amherst School area wearing a blue vest.
We are appealing for sightings of Dora to be reported to the GSPCA by calling 257261.
Please do not chase the dog as you may scare her from the area but instead report the sighting immediately.
Gilly McClean GSPCA Receptionist said “Yesterday we had a report of a mixed-breed, medium sized dog missing from the Amherst School area called Dora.”
“She is brown and grey in colour and wearing a blue vest.”
The GSPCA is warning dog owners of the possible presence of a waxy substance along our coast line which could well be Palm Oil.
We have been informed of a sighting at Pembroke earlier today.
The public is advised not to remove the palm oil but anyone who has picked any up should double wrap it in plastic and dispose of it with their normal refuse.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We have had a report of a white oily substance being seen at Pembroke and we are asking all dog owners to be vigilant.”
Last night the GSPCA held its first Dog First Aid Course in 2 years and next week is the Cat First aid Course.
Taking the course was be GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne who has over 24 years working in the field of animal rescue and with over 3000 animals through the doors every year at the GSPCA the team see cases of animal first aid on a daily basis here in Guernsey.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We have been running dog and cat first aid courses for over seven years and with the 20 attendees last night we have trained over 320 participants to help save animals lives.”
We are very lucky that most of Guernsey's beaches are dog friendly during the summer months. From the 1st October the beaches where dogs are banned between 1st May and 30th September have the restrictions lifted and these are –
Fermain
Petit Bot
L'Erée
Vazon (Northern end)
Cobo
Port Soif
L'Ancresse
Pembroke
Dogs are not permitted on Lihou Island and Lihou causeway all year round.
With hot weather the GSPCA always receives calls and reports from the public that have seen dogs locked in cars, dogs being walked on hot pavements, animals in direct sunlight and we want to remind all pet owners of the real dangers to their pets.
With the warm weather and direct sunlight, dogs and other animals whether in cars or their pens are potentially in a situation where you could kill your pet if it is left, regardless of the situation.
The GSPCA along with the RSPCA, Battersea Dogs’ Home, and the Kennel Club (to name a few) supports a review of the Dangerous Dog Act 1991 and all breed specific legislation and policies. However, sadly most welfare campaigners believe DEFRA will be unlikely to want to backtrack on this outdated Legislation that has now been in place for 30 years.

All around Guernsey each year businesses and offices have had their 4 legged friends come to work and this ear Bring Your Dog To Work Day takes places today, Friday 25th June.
Having a dog in the room can make human colleagues more cooperative, reduce stress, increase job satisfaction and productivity.
When adopting a dog or any animal from the GSPCA we often ask how many hours potential owners may be at work. Perhaps the question should actually be - are you able to take your dog to work?
Every Summer in Guernsey we see a rise in case of kennel cough in dogs.
This year is no different and kennel cough for those that don’t is an airway infection which causes a nasty cough in dogs. More severe cases can occasionally result in symptoms such as a high temperature or a reduced appetite.
Please call your vet for advice if you think your dog has kennel cough. Most dogs improve on their own, but some need treatment from a vet.
