Recently we put out an appeal for volunteers to knit mice for the many cats we have at the Shelter as strays, looking for homes and also in for welfare reasons.
We had a fantastic response and within days handed out dozens of patterns and since received hundreds of mice that have been hand made and now entertain the cats and kittens we have at the Shelter.
During June 5 staff got the chance to learn from some of the leading animal welfare organisations in the UK and meet many from around the world.
The GSPCA are part of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes which is an organisation made up of hundreds of animal charities from around the UK. In a recent meeting after speaking to a member of staff from the Dogs Trust, Lorna Prince our Welfare Manager was invited to take part in their week long International Training Programme.
Last month two of our kittens were rehomed to Alderney.
Jack and Jill were the first kittens to be born at the Shelter this year. They were born on the 12th February from a stray cat called Darwina who has had a number of health problems, but fortunately has raised two gorgeous kittens.
When Jack and Jill became available for adoption we placed them on our website and social networks. A lovely lady by the name of Patti Brett spotted them on our facebook page and got in touch.
The GSPCA since the launch of our special offer of £4.99p has microchipped over 100 dogs and cats. With nearly 1 in 2 stray cats and dogs that come into the Shelter have no form of ID the GSPCA launched an offer to try and ensure as many pets are chipped as possible.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'We are so pleased with the number we have chipped so far but there are tens of thousands of dogs and cats in Guernsey and if there are only half that are chipped we still have a long way to go.'
Below are some of the details, facts and figures released last month -
We are always looking for volunteers to help at the Shelter in a variety of roles.
With the dramatic increase in hedgehogs over the past 5 months we are appealing for those interested in helping care and clean the hedgehogs here at the Animal Shelter. In fact we currently have 64 hedgehogs in our care with another on it's way.
With the cold weather the GSPCA are appealing for help towards electric heat pads for the animals in our care.
We have a variety of species from cats to hedgehogs all in need of items to keep them warm in this cold snap. Although we have enough to manage at present we are appealing for donations so that we can purchase additional heaters in case we have more sick, injured or abandoned animals brought in this winter and what will no doubt be a busy time when the fledgling season starts.
