Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'We have had a lovely Summer this year and many animals have done extrremely well in the wild but with this coming cold snap here at the GSPCA we are concerned for them, pets and other animals kept outside.'
Last Winter the GSPCA received large number of calls from concerned members of public about horses and other animals in wet and muddy fields and once again we are preparing for a similar season with the current weather conditions.
Unfortunately due to the very wet Winter we had to endure here in Guernsey last year the GSPCA had a number of animals that were reported to the GSPCA in concerning conditions.
Lorna Prince GSPCA Animal Welfare Manager said ‘With such a wet Winter last year many animals were affected, both wild and domestic.’

Some advice on walking your dog in the snow from the GSPCA -
Place your dog in a sweater or dog coat to help keep your dog warm. If you have a white dog then a fluorescent coat is advisable and during the dark nights are ideal (these are on sale at the GSPCA Animal Shelter.) Don't forget to wrap up warm yourself.
Keep the walks short. Winter walks should not be as long as summer strolls. A couple of times around the block should suffice, but take care underfoot.

But you can also do your bit to prevent animals suffering over the cold period.
Do you have a pond?
If you have a pond, make sure you check it every day for ice, as toxic gases can build up in the water of a frozen pond. These can kill fish or frogs that are hibernating at the bottom.
Last night the GSPCA had a young hedgehog that if had been left to fend for himself he surely wouldn't of made it through the winter.
Hedgehogs would normally be hibernating at this time of year, but due to the mild Autumn and late litters of hoglets many hedgehogs are still awake and many not large enough to sleep through the winter.
In Guernsey one of our largest land mammals is the hedgehog and this is the time of year which is crucial for them before they go into hibernation.
For keen gardeners encouraging hedgehogs into your garden can help control the snail and slug population as well as other insect life.
To attract hedgehogs to your garden you can try providing hedgehog homes, both natural man-made such as placing a piece of board against a pile of bricks to form a type of bivouac. Alternatively if you pop to the Animal Shelter we have a selection on sale which are purpose built.
