A year since the GSPCA had over 40 hamsters the Shelter has recently received another home full.
Fortunately less than quarter the number of last years incident the GSPCA is asking pet owners to take care when choosing small mammals as pets. Hamsters puberty happens from as young as 4 weeks and with a gestation period of 2 to 3 weeks and a litter size of 1 to 18 babies a home could quickly be overwhelmed.
Ironically these hamsters are now looking for homes during Rabbit Awareness Week which is another small mammal that the Shelter has large numbers of both strays and unwanted litters every year. Currently the Shelter has 6 rabbits looking for homes as well as a selection of other pets such as birds, ferrets and guinea pigs.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'Thank fully the owner of these hamsters got in touch with us quickly as if they hadn't within a few more weeks the 8 hamsters could have easily been well over 50.' 'It is important before you home any pet you know it's history and if it has been kept with the opposite sex as you may find that you have more than you bargained for.' 'These little guys and girls are looking for a home but potential homes must be aware these are nocturnal pets and are very very fast.
The Chinese Hamsters now named Harry, Bobby, Ringo, Junior, Charlie, Molly & Roxy are now looking for a good home and anyone interested should contact the Shelter on 01481 257261 or pop in any day except Sunday between 9am and 4.30pm.
