Tomorrow we celebrate 142 years helping animals in Guernsey.
All week businesses, companies and events have been held to help raise funds for the Shelter in St Andrews and the work that goes on caring for the 200 - 300 animals there as well as the welfare and rescue work carried out 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
All week we have been celebrating GSPCA Purple Week which is a way we celebrate our anniversary each year.
Tomorrow as part of the celebrations we have Sidney's Sponsored Events 1920's St. Valentine's Day Mafia Ball at the St Pierre Park Hotel and to find out more please click here.
Each year we help in excess of 3000 animals in many ways. We were established on the 14th Febraury 1873 shortly after a meeting on the 11th February on the same year which was Chaired by the Dean of Guernsey at the time.
During the late 1800's and early 1900's we were based at a number of addresses in and around St Peter Port including the Slaughter House until we purchased the site we now reside in St Andrews which was bought in October 1929 for £400 with a few fields acquired in addition.
A number of our current buildings date back to the 1950's and this year we have launched our Build Partner programme, which is a way you can be part of the GSPCA's future and help us in rebuilding 5 structures in one multi purpose animal welfare building.
In the last 12 months we have had a very exciting year with a huge variety of species we have helped and through the door including kingfishers, a 61 year old tortoise, grey seals, Fortune the dolphin to mention just a few.
To rescue and care for the thousands of animals through our doors costs in excess of £650,000 each year and in addition to this we need to raise funds to maintain and construct our new multi purpose animal welfare building.
Education is a vital part of our work and this was established when we were first founded and every year we talk to thousands of adults and children about our work and responsible animal welfare.
Without your support we really couldn't exist from leaving a lasting legacy to adopting an animal from the Shelter, donating via our Wish List to volunteering some time we are hugely grateful to each and every person that supports our vital work.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "For 142 years the community of Guernsey have shown a passion for supporting the work of the GSPCA and from all past and present we would like to thank each and every person that has ever helped, supported, donated, adopted, help rescue or been part of something we feel is very special."
"Every year we help thousands of animals and many owners and we are all very proud of the work we do and could not do it without the public support."
"142 years ago they looked to the future to help animal welfare in Guernsey and nearly 10 generations later we continue to look to improve our facilities and how we can help improve the work that we carry out 24 hours a day 7 days a week."
"The main focus currently for the GSPCA is our new multi purpose animal welfare building which replaces 5 of our buildings many of which date back to the 1950's."
"We are appealing for support towards our rebuild through our Build Partner programme and we would love to hear from anyone interested in supporting this huge undertaking."
"I would hope that if you were to ask the Dean of Guernsey 142 years ago who Chaired our very first meeting what he thinks of our work today that he would be very proud of the society and how far the GSPCA has come since those humble beginnings."
"Without your support we couldn't exist, from leaving a gift in your will to donating a tin of animal feed at one of our donation bins, thank you from all of the team and animals at the GSPCA your support help saves lives and improve animal welfare in Guernsey."
