Last night the GSPCA staff and volunteers were kept very busy with stray animals and wildlife.

It is often very busy at this time of year, but one of the animals rescued from a cat and brought in was an extremely rare sight for Guernsey.

A Natterer's Bat was brought in which have only been seen on a very small number of occasions.

There is said to be a breeding colony in Jersey, but no such location has been found in Guernsey that we know of.

Many bats are rescued and brought into the GSPCA, but after initial first aid they are then passed on to the Guernsey Bat Group's Pat Costen who is the island's resident expert and helps with their rehabilitation and release.

Geoff George Animal Collection Officer accepted the bat last night said "I've been out to rescue many bats for the GSPCA, but normally they are Long Eared or Pipistrelle Bats."

"We have called the very rare Natterer's Bat for Guernsey Pip Squeak and he is now in the safe hands of Pat Costen who will hopefully be able to rehabilitate and release the bat back to the wild."

"If ever you have to rescue a bat it is important not to use your hands and to wear a pair of thick gloves or use a towel or jumper."

Natterer's Bat Facts:

The Latin name for the Natterer's Bat is Myotis nattereri. The Natterer's bat is a medium-sized bat which usually forages around trees and other vegetation, often gleaning insects from the surface of foliage.

In the summer months they often roosts in old buildings with timber beams including buildings and barns. It mainly eats small flies, small moths, caddis flies, lacewings, beetles and spiders.

Natterer's bat is found throughout most of the British Isles, although it is a relatively scarce species.  It is estimated that there are 148,000 throughout the UK.
