The GSPCA has been helping animals in Guernsey for over 141 years and from the moment the organisation was formed volunteers have been vital in ensuring that the organisation is able to help animals around the clock, 365 days of the year.
Yesterday between the GSPCA Fun Dog Show and to care for the 250 animals at the Shelter there were over 40 volunteers helping the GSPCA.
This week is Volunteers Week and we are extremely grateful at the GSPCA for all the volunteers that help through the year.
We now have over 300 volunteers helping at the GSPCA each year from cleaning kennels to helping at events such as our dog show.
One very special volunteer is Hayley Malpas. Hayley helps volunteer at the Shelter with the ferrets.
Hayley loves ferrets and she is without doubt our best volunteer with them. She has been helping at the Shelter for over 10 years and it is rare for a week to go by without her coming in to clean them out, socialise them or take them out for a walk.
At the GSPCA each year we have seen an increase in ferret numbers coming into the Shelter with over 30 last year and 5 currently at the Shelter.
Hayley Malpas said 'I've volunteered at the GSPCA for the past 10 years and I still absolutely love it.'
' I work with the much overlooked ferrets.'
'Despite a few bites, it is incredibly rewarding to see a scared, sick and untrusting ferret blossom into a beautiful playful pet.'
'There can be tears when saying goodbye to a ferret as they trot off to their forever homes but knowing that they're going to live happily ever after thanks to my help is a priceless feeling.'
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'Hayley is such a star with the ferrets at the GSPCA.'
'We have so many amazing volunteers at the GSPCA but Hayley is a very special lady as she spends so much time with our ferrets and has even helped at events to promote and educate the public about these fun and entertaining little pets.'
'During Volunteers Week each day we will be looing at volunteers that help here at the Animal Shelter and find out why they enjoy their time assisting us at the GSPCA.'
'To become a volunteer at the Shelter and find out more please pop along to the GSPCA on Wednesday 2nd July at 6.30pmto find out how you could help animals in Guernsey.'
