Today the States of Guernsey issued the following advice -
Following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Germany in January, there have been further outbreaks of the disease in Hungary and Slovakia.
Although the disease poses no risk to human health, to protect our local livestock from risk of infection, the States Veterinary Officers and the Guernsey Border Agency are asking that, in addition to the restrictions in place for Germany, people arriving into the Bailiwick avoid importing fresh meat, meat products, milk and dairy products from pigs, sheep, cattle and goats from Hungary and Slovakia.
Currently, animal products from pigs, sheep, cattle and goats from the EU (excluding Germany), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, can only be imported for personal consumption if they:
• are packaged to EU commercial standards and weigh no more than 2kg per person, and
• bear an identification or health mark (or commercial labelling if it is an animal by-product) to evidence that they are commercially produced.
However, people are also now being asked to not bring any of these products from Hungary or Slovakia as well.
More information about the restrictions in place for imports from Germany are available at https://gov.gg/animal-product-imports-prohibited-from-Germany?fbclid=IwY2xjawJSItlleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHbYcHhnXdTQwice0JwaAl73SAw9Mppzy5dTSX21KVQwm6ZE8zAoEPFSG2Q_aem_7bWjxigYdM-FnNWFkFOvxw ‘
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “The GSPCA wanted to share the concerns from the States of Guernsey in regards foot and mouth outbreaks in Europe and their important safety messages to ensure the biosecurity of the animals here in Guernsey.”
“There is no risk to human health from foot and mouth but for our farm animals especially it is a huge concern.”
“Every week the GSPCA are called out to help escaped farm animals which is often the most dangerous part of our work as when you have large farm animals and horses on roads especially foggy dark evenings it is a real concern and especially with this lovely weather it is so important when out and about to ensure gates are closed and animals secure and safe.”
“We also get called out with concerns of care with all animals from pets to farm animals and if anyone ever is worried you can contact by calling 257261.”
“There are many ways you can help support our vital 24/7 work and donate or raise funds for the hundreds of animals in our care.”
“With nearly 100 hedgehogs, 1 seal pup, musk turtles, dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, reptiles and many birds we help over 3000 animals through the doors every year.”
“With so many animals in our care we would love you to join our sponsor scheme to help us each month.”
“Just a couple of pounds each month can make a massive difference in helping the animals in our care and to find out more please go to http://www.gspca.org.gg/sites/default/files/Angel%20sponsor%20form%20special%202018%20new.pdf .”
