At the GSPCA we never know what will arrive through the doors.
One recent arrival was Woodrow a woodpecker found very poorly below a window in St Peter Port
Jack Le Moigne GSPCA Animal Care Assistant said “On the 27th June we had a more unusual arrival at the GSPCA.”
“A member of public found a woodpecker in a gutter.”
“Apparently it flew into finder's window.”
“When it arrived it had blood coming from mouth and nostrils, we were worried it might have a brain injury, was lying on its side lifeless and had very rapid breathing, we were very concerned.”
“The following morning we were so pleased to see the great spotted woodpecker eating.”
“The next day on the 29th June Woodrow as we called him was much more settled, eating very well, bright & very lively.”
“By the 1st July he was very boisterous, ate all his worms overnight and we decided to release him back to the wild which went so well.”
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We help over 3000 wild animals and birds every year and from 700 hedgehogs in some years to Barnacle Bill the loggerhead turtle that arrived last Autumn we never know what to expect.”
“We do occasionally help woodpeckers each year and at the end of last month Woodrow a great spotted woodpecker arrived in a very poorly state.”
“Thanks to the TLC of our team Woodrow quickly recovered and we are delighted to say he is now back in the wild.”
