As well as all the storm damage at the GSPCA we have seen many casualties over the last few days.
Today a couple rescued a young loggerhead turtle from Chouet.
Michael Le Page said “We were walking along Chouet this morning where we discovered many things washed up and one was a sea turtle covered in barnacles.2
“We nearly didn’t see him, but once we realised what he was we picked him up and got him to the GSPCA.”
Michaela Le Page said “We thought he was dead at first as he wasn’t moving.”
“Thankfully he moved so we got him to the GSPCA.”
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “At 930am this morning Michael and Michaela arrived at the GSPCA with a bag with a sea turtle they found at Chouet while out on a walk.”
“We believe it is a young loggerhead turtle just under one foot long and 1.255kg.”
“The turtle has been called Barnacle Bill and is currently in our wildlife room and will need warming up very slowly over the coming weeks.”
“It is likely Barnacle Bill got caught in Storm Ciaran as they should be in the warm waters of the mediterranean.”
“We have had a loggerhead turtle 7 years ago we named Olivia but she was a full grown adult and also Myrtle the turtle a green turtle nearly 20 years ago.”
“The winds and the storm have sadly caused a lot of damage and our wildlife have really struggled but we are here 24/7 when needed just call 257261 or op to the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.”
