Tomorrow is International Rabbit Day and to celebrate we are not only appealing for homes for our longest stay rabbits and encouraging all owners to ensure their bunnies have a happy hoppy life we are also launching our Small Animal and Rabbit Build Appeal.
With over 400 rabbits through our doors in the first 9 months of 2021 and many other small animals we are appealing for funds to transform an area at the Shelter to make a purpose built small animal section. We estimate it will cost a total of £60,000, please donate to help the man animals that come into our care.

The area is what was the onsite charity shop that closed last year and moved into Smith Street.
There is a lovely large room which we are looking to put a special flooring down and then section it for a variety of animals and put in purpose built cages.
There will be two intake areas for new arrival animals, a room for those rabbits looking for homes especially indoor bunnies, a reptile room, a bird room and other utilities.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “This Saturday is International Rabbit Day and to mark the day we are launching an appeal to help the rabbits and small animals in our care.”
“With the onsite charity shop moved to Smith Street we are now going to transform the area to a Small Animal and Rabbit Unit and launched an appeal to raise £60,000 so we can put a new floor and build all the sections we need to care for the hundreds of small animals that come through our doors every year.”
“The small animals and rabbits have never had a purpose built area solely designated to them at the GSPCA as we have used various areas around the site and sometimes multiple when we have helped 60 rabbits from one address or 100 guinea pigs from another.”
“We have launched a page to donate to the build appeal by going to https://giving.gg/donate/event/8046/Small-Animal-and-Rabbit-Build-Appeal .”
“Small animals and especially rabbits are the main pet we have serious neglect complaints about.”
“Often they are kept in tiny hutches, not cleaned and inappropriate diets.”
“Its really important that they have plenty of room to run and exercise and that hay and grass are the main part of their diet.”
“At the GSPCA we currently have 14 rabbits in need of homes and some which have been with us for 3 years.”
Nicolle Morgan GSPCA Head or Rabbits and Small Animals said “Butterscotch has been with us the longest as he arrived in May of 2018 and Jemima in June of the same year (pictured with Nicolle) and both are on our Bunny Hop Hill and for International Rabbit Day we would love to find these and other rabbits the loving home they deserved.”
“Sadly the wild coloured rabbits really struggle to find homes.”
“Hazel and Lavender were born at the GSPCA in May 2019 and they too really need a loving home.”
“Its really important you vaccinate your rabbits as we are seeing huge numbers of myxi bunnies and other diseases at the moment.”
“You can see lots of the rabbits looking for homes on our website.”
“Please do donate to our Small Animal and Rabbit Build Appeal as we really want to give every animal that comes to the GSPCA the very best facilities.”
