Today show your pets how much they mean to you.
November 1st is National Cook For Your Pets Day but please ensure your pet is fed the correct diet.
Our pets bring us so much joy and give some much of themselves shouldn’t we give back?
This November 1st show your pets how much you care by focusing on their health and nutrition and cooking for them. You can make a day of meals or a simple treat, whatever you make they are sure to love it!
Cooking Tips
These are some of the foods you need to avoid feeding your pet -
Avocados
Onions
Garlic
Chocolate in any form
Coffee (grounds, beans, chocolate-covered espresso beans)
Tea
Yeast dough
Salt
Grapes and Raisins
Tomato leaves and stems (green parts)
Potato leaves and stems (green parts)
Rhubarb leaves
Mouldy or spoiled foods
Alcoholic beverages
Be careful with milk and other milk-based products as they can cause diarrhoea or other digestive upset.
One of the safest things to cook for your dog or cat is boiled chicken which is simple, digestible and safe in most cases. We would however like to mention that anyone who has an animal on a controlled diet prescribed by the vet to speak to them about what is safe or not to feed your pet.
If you are looking for recipes for you pets then please visit http://cookforyourpets.com/ and you can see a list of potential items you could make.
Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager said “We hope that all pet owners enjoy today and celebrate it by cooking for their pets but we do urge owners to ensure they feed their pets a meal that is safe for them”
“If owners are unsure then we would say that giving them their normal diet may be best but if you know your animals diet tolerances then there are lots of recipes available both for domestic pets and wild animals and birds you can feed them to celebrate today.”
Steve Byrne added "Not only is it National Cook For Your Pets Day, it is also Anna Paints Birthday who is one of our Senior Animal Care Assistants and we would like to wish her many happy returns from all of the staff and animals at the shelter."
If you are looking for food or treats for your pets, wild birds or hedgehogs then please pop along to the Shelter as we have a range of all sorts of items on sale.
The GSPCA hopes that everyone enjoys this day but we would like to remind everyone about the stresses that fireworks have on our animals this time of year.
