With the sunny weather and gardens blooming the GSPCA have had a busy few weeks with injured wildlife found in areas that have been strimmed or cut.
The main casualty have been hedgehogs and even mothers with young that have been found whilst an area has been cleared or cut.
Over recent years we have seen a decrease in feral cat colonies thanks to the work of the GSPCA and that of Guernsey Animal Aid Cats, but it only takes one unnetuered female cat and one male to result in a litter of kittens.
Last week whilst cutting an area a member of public was shocked to find a 6 week old kitten hidden amongest the undergrowth.
The kitten sadly had sustained injuries to her back legs due to a strimming and also was unwell due to cat flu.
She was rushed to the GSPCA Animal Shelter and then onto the vets where she remained overnight to have her wounds stitched and administered treatment.
Phoenix as she has been named is now back at the Shelter, doing well and although still showing some attitude her wounds are healing.
The GSPCA would urge anyone cutting overgrown areas or hedges to check the area thoroughly before starting as animals lives could be put at risk.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "Phoenix the kitten was extremely lucky and it was great that the finder acted so quickly."
"We have had a surge in the numbers of injured hedgehogs with strimmer injuries some of which have been so severe they haven't survived the journey to the Shelter."
"Before gardening or strimming please check the area thoroughly as there are many young birds, hedgehogs and possibly even kittens taking refuge in the undergrowth."
"Phoenix is doing well and is having another vet check today, although she has a lot of attitude for such a young lady."
"Phoenix was found in Pitronnerie Road and we would ask anyone in the area to watch out for other kittens and an unneutered female cat."
"We are always appealing for donations to help with operations and treatments to help animals and kittens just like Phoenix at the GSPCA."
