Last month just short of 30 children from St Martins Primary School enjoyed an Epic Week in the sun at the GSPCA.
When the children were asked what Epic Week activity they wanted to do hundreds had wanted to come along to the GSPCA but as spaces were limited the lucky children were selected and had their first afternoon at the Shelter on Monday 21st May.
The first day involved a full behind the scenes tour and the children got to see animals from baby birds to the many reptiles, met a hedgehog to the tortoise racing, well the tortoise were walking along the grass in front of the children and we called it racing which they really enjoyed.
The second day the children had the opportunity to experience enriching the environment for the animals so the first part involved reading to over 25 cats as well as some of the other animals in the care of the GSPCA from Webster the tarantula to Debbie the bearded dragon.
The second part of day two involved foraging for wild plants and seeding grasses and using toilet rolls to make treat toys for the guinea pigs, rabbits and birds at the Animal Shelter which the children got to see being fed and popped into the animal pens.
Day 3 focused on the conservation work of the GSPCA with Vanessa Crispini from the Pollinator Project and Ann Wragg from St Andrews Floral Group.
The children really enjoyed weeding around the site to the surprise of many of the adults and then helped plant hanging baskets and the herb garden with pollinating plants good for bees which they thoroughly enjoyed.
The final day at the GSPCA the children brought cakes which they had made for a Cake Sale near the GSPCA Charity Shop which raised an amazing £117 and many of the children's parents and family came along to support and see the great cakes and items on sale as well as visit some of the animals.
On the Friday GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne was invited along to the celebration of the end of Epic Week at St Martins Primary School and the children presented Steve with a lovely card full of pictures and kind comments as well as a gift.
Steve gave the children certificates as a way of thanks and all the children said how much they enjoyed their week.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "This is the third time we have held this event and what an amazing Epic Week we had with St Martins Primary School Students last month."
"They helped in so many ways and learnt so many things and were all so well behaved, their parents and school can be very proud."
"With a different focus each day from a full tour, to environmental enrichment, conservation to helping raise the funds to help the 24/7 work we carry out at the GSPCA the St Martins children were truly epic."
"It was great to have Vanessa from the Pollinator Project and Ann Wragg from St Andrews Floral Group on the Conservation Day which the children really enjoyed.”
"A huge thanks to all from St Martins Primary School and all that helped make Epic Week so much fun at the GSPCA."
Here are some of the comments in the card presented to Steve –
