A conger eel not a baby seal but here is advice on what to do if you see a sick seal pup from the GSPCA

Submitted by Steve on 15:24, 5th Oct, 2016 | 0

Every Autumn the shores of the Bailiwick see grey seal pups being born, and the GSPCA are issuing advice today to help prepare islanders and those walking our shores.

On the weekend we were called out to what was thought to be an injured seal pup, but instead of finding a seal our Ambulance Volunteer Warden Suzy Rose was sadly faced with a dead conger eel that had been washed up.

It was reported locally in the media that we had rescued and were caring for a seal pup at the GSPCA, although this is not true as the conger eel that we were called out to had passed away.

It's that Spring time of year - Baby bird advice for Guernsey - please remember often healthy fledglings are best left alone

Submitted by Steve on 23:37, 3rd May, 2016 | 0

With Spring well underway the GSPCA are asking Islanders to please be mindful of the many fledglings popping up around the Bailiwick.

The GSPCA would like to remind that as a general rule, it is best to leave baby birds alone.

A baby bird has a greater chance of survival in the wild than it has being hand-reared by man as they learn to fend for themselves and how to forage for food by their parents.

Around 2 weeks after hatching young birds in your Bailiwick garden usually leave the nest, just before they learn how to fly.

Wet weather advice for owners and pets in Guernsey

As we all know, winter is Guernsey is often wet and windy and this can cause problems for animals, especially if they are not used to it.  The GSPCA receives many calls from concerned members of the public about livestock during the winter months.  So far this winter has been exceptionally wet resulting in large areas grazing being covered with standing water and land becoming rapidly poached as livestock walk upon it.

Don't forget the fireworks and ensuring your pets are safe on New Years Eve

Submitted by Steve on 16:02, 16th Dec, 2015 | 0

On New Years Eve at midnight to celebrate the New Year many will be setting off fireworks, so please think of your pets and animals around you.

Every year the GSPCA are called out and receive stray dogs and cats during periods of fireworks, which have either escaped or run off due to being scared by the loud bangs they make.

Sadly less than 45% of the stray dogs and cats are microchipped that are found as strays and brought to the GSPCA, and even less have collars with tags.

Submitted by Steve on 09:47, 18th Nov, 2015 | 0

Every Autumn the shores of the Bailiwick see grey seal pups being born, and the GSPCA are issuing advice today because of the inclement weather we have seen recently.

The earliest seal we have rescued in recent years was Jethou Bumblebee who was found during the last week of November back in 2012.

During the last few winters the GSPCA have rescued four Grey Seal Pups in total.  Two in 2013/14 Eden and Trinity and the previous winter Jethou Bumblebee and Hanois.
