Every Summer in Guernsey we see a rise in case of kennel cough in dogs.
This year is no different and kennel cough for those that don’t is an airway infection which causes a nasty cough in dogs. More severe cases can occasionally result in symptoms such as a high temperature or a reduced appetite.
Please call your vet for advice if you think your dog has kennel cough. Most dogs improve on their own, but some need treatment from a vet.
The GSPCA have been extremely busy in recent weeks with huge numbers of baby birds needing hand rearing that have been found or rescued.
Baby birds are always where possible best left in the wild to be rehabilitated by their parents.
Nicolle Morgan GSPCA Animal Care Assistant said “Very recently we have received a few birds nests full of baby birds varying from pinkies as in newly hatched to fledglings (almost fully feathered), mainly due to disruption from gardening activities.”
This weekend we have a wonderful Open Garden event and if you can help make cakes then please do get in touch so we can help raise as much funds as possible for two great causes.
If you can help please contact Wendy Woodcock on 07781 157465 or email wendyw@cwgsy.net
The Open garden is by kind permission of Wendy Woodcock at the gardens at Samarkand, Rue de la Hougue, Castel will be open to the public.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We are hugely grateful to all the team at The International Stock Exchange who are doing so much to help and support our work at the GSPCA.”
On Sunday the GSPCA was once again out fund raising and promoting our work at this years Arts Seafront Sunday.
With hundreds of stalls, demonstrations, performers and things to see and do a fantastic day was had by all.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We had a fantastic day at the Arts Seafront Sunday and must thank all involved and supported.”
“We raised £800 and a special thanks to Guy Hardill and Leighton for helping me on our GSPCA stall.”
On Tuesday evening the GSPCA greeted 17 volunteers from Paws for Support for an evening of training.
The training held was to learn to save dogs lives as GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne carried out the GSPCA Dog First Aid Course.
This was the first Dog First Aid course due to covid since November 2019.
The 17 ladies from Paws for Support had an informative evening with wonderful thanks and kind words shared before they left after the 2 hour training session.
The GSPCA couldn’t achieve so much without our trained staff and we currently have a full time post and we are also looking for casual staff, especially for those available during weekends and bank holidays.
The full time post include various duties from animal care to reception and the successful applicants will also be required to help cover night shifts at the GSPCA which tend to be over the weekend.
The Guernsey Arts Commission are proud to announce that Arts Sunday this year will be going ahead on the 6th June, that’s this Sunday.
We will once again have our GSPCA stall there raising much needed funds for the many animals in our care so please join us for a day celebrating the community and arts, with performances throughout the day, an arts market and activities to get involved in!
Since February 1873 the GSPCA has been run by a team of dedicated Committee Members who give up their time to lead the organisation.
We are incredibly lucky to have an amazing and skilled Board and recently the GSPCA having recently reviewed our strategy and future vision which can be seen on our about page - http://www.gspca.org.gg/about
Over the last 4 Thursdays the GSPCA have had a wonderful group of staff volunteering from The International Stock Exchange (TISE) each morning.
Each of the mornings 4 or 5 staff came along to help out around the GSPCA and especially helping with the Memorial Garden we have here at the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.
Tim Pellett GSPCA Community and Training Officer said “It was great to greet, meet and get the lovely team from TISE helping around the GSPCA over the last 4 weeks.”
