2019 the GSPCA saw a record breaking 618 hedgehogs come through the doors and 2020 was even bigger with an amazing 729 hedgehogs.
Despite lockdown the GSPCA has been incredibly busy and especially with 25 hedgehogs in since 1st January with 141 currently in our care.
Due to the huge numbers and many extremely sick hedgehogs we are in desperate need of additional Intensive Care Units which cost £600 each, but really help save lives.
As we celebrate 148 years this week with our #GSPCAPurpleWeek could you help us help hedgehogs in Guernsey.
The GSPCA continues to help growing numbers of pigeons with Pigeon Paramyxovirus.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Since the 1st January the GSPCA can sadly confirm that Pigeon Paramyxovirus has killed over 100 pigeons in Guernsey and numbers continue to grow.”
“Every day and night the GSPCA are called out to very sick and injured pigeons and due to the terrible effects of the disease there is less than a one in ten chance we can help save those we are called out to.”
Many are celebrating and supporting us for #GSPCAPurpleWeek and tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday also know to many as Pancake Day and many of us will shopping for our ingredients. The GSPCA would like to remind everyone to think of the produce that you are going to use and please look to buy Animal Welfare friendly products such as free range eggs.
Although the EU legislation has forced many battery farms to improve their standards, chickens that live as free range birds have a much better quality of life.
Pongo is an incredible long haired black and white cat who is diabetic and we really want him to find his forever home.
Pongo arrived during the first lockdown and although we are in lockdown once again you can still complete an adoption form if you are interested in this amazing cat.
To see the adoption procedure and download a cat adoption form please go to http://www.gspca.org.gg/animals
This week Ellie the seal pup enjoyed her first dip.
Ellie has now joined seal pups Joey and Titan in our rehab pools as she is strong and well enough to do so.
We are really pleased to report that Joey is eating well on his own and Titan and Ellie are learning what to do and putting on weight daily.
Can you donate or even sponsor them to help support our vital work and support us celebrating #GSPCAPurpleWeek
#GSPCAPurpleWeek is a time to celebrate the long history of the Animal Shelter and the work of the GSPCA.
The GSPCA week starts Friday 12th February and celebrations will carry on until the 19th with our anniversary being Valentines Day the 14th February.
148 years ago some kind islanders came together as they realised that cruelty to animals was an issue and started the islands charity to prevent cruelty to animals, promote kindness and educate.
With cold weather the GSPCA want pet owners to consider all the animals of Guernsey. During a cold snap the GSPCA are on full alert, ready to deal with a variety of animals affected by the low temperatures.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “With the cold snap upon us the GSPCA are concerned for wildlife, pets and other animals kept outside.”
Pigeon Paramyxovirus has been confirmed in Guernsey. This follows investigations by the States Veterinary Officers into the high numbers of diseased pigeons from St. Peter Port that have been hospitalised at the GSPCA.
Last week the GSPCA reported on the huge increase in deceased and sick pigeons especially from the St Peter Port area - http://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/important-message-gspca-sharp-increase-sick-and-injured-pigeons
