Yesterday the GSPCA welcomed its first ever group of Voluntourists.

10 holiday makers from the Crystal Serenity spent much of yesterday learning about and helping animals in Guernsey.

The first ever trip of its kind at the Shelter included 8 Americans and 2 Chinese.

They arrived at the Shelter around 10am where GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne took them on a tour of the Shelter so they could get their bearings and to find out about the work we do and the history of the GSPCA as well as a little about Guernsey.

GSPCA Domestic Birds Move Outside for the First Time

Submitted by Steve on 13:19, 1st Aug, 2014 | 0

Today we are pleased to announce that domestic birds that come in for rehoming now have a lovely aviary with a view to live in and stretch their wings.

With the new animal welfare legislation now a month after coming into force and the GSPCA striving to lead an example in animal care four birds today moved into their new home.

The wooden framed aviary welcomed two budgies and two cockatiels who are at the Shelter in need of a home.

Cockatiels Rosie and Jim were the first to fly up onto the perches, closely followed by Peter and Paula the budgies.

Each of those attending had an area they would like to focus such as ferrets to cats, fund raising to dogs and we would like to thank them for attending and getting involved.

With more hoglets in at the GSPCA here is advice on what to do if you find young hedgehogs

Submitted by Steve on 17:23, 29th Jul, 2014 | 0

At the GSPCA we have started to see the another round of Hoglets (baby hedgehogs) being found and rescued in Guernsey.

You normally see Hoglets in May, June or July, when the first litters are generally born, and in August-September, when the second litters are born.

During April and May we had a number of Hoglets rescued and also mothers that gave birth on site, many of which are already back in the wild.

The average size of a litter is four to five, and they appear after about a 4 1/2 week pregnancy.
