Last night in the Market Square the Livingroom Customer Service Awards were held.
Businesses and charities across Guernsey were represented in the many categories.
The GSPCA were lucky enough to have our very own Helen Holmes short listed in the Humble Volunteer category and was overwhelmed to win the award.
Last night the GSPCA staff and volunteers were kept very busy with stray animals and wildlife.
It is often very busy at this time of year, but one of the animals rescued from a cat and brought in was an extremely rare sight for Guernsey.
A Natterer's Bat was brought in which have only been seen on a very small number of occasions.
There is said to be a breeding colony in Jersey, but no such location has been found in Guernsey that we know of.
With the New Animal Welfare Ordinance (2012) coming into effect this week a meeting was held with those at the forefront of implementing and working with the new legislation.
Staff from Commerce and Employment including Mike Northmore and David Chamberlin the States Vet, staff from the GSPCA including the Manager Steve Byrne and Welfare and Education Officer Sarah Creasey and the Guernsey Police Training Officers PC Claire Milner and PC Adrian Walder met to discuss the changes and the implications to the animals of Guernsey and their owners.
This Saturday at the St Pierre Park Hotel it is the Viva Las Vegas Casino Ball to raise funds for two local charities the GSPCA and the Thomson Memorial Trust.
With a 1950/60's dress code, casino, an American themed menu, the band Jomali, a fantastic raffle and lot's or surprises planned we are all looking forward to a great night.
On Saturday the GSPCA were invited along to the Vauvert School Summer Fayre.
The gates were opened at 2.30pm by Dave the Minion and with the queues extending hundreds of yards both up and down the street in St Peter Port outside the school the stalls were flooded with adults and children.
For the GSPCA we had a Coconut Shy, Spin the Wheel, Tombola, a selection of animals looking for homes, pet supplies and other fund raising goods.
Earlier this year Sarah Ozanne and Lucy Ogier (Animal Care Assistants at the GSPCA) organised a competition to increase awareness of Hedgehogs in Guernsey.
There were two classes - creating a 'Hedgehog Awareness Poster' and 'Build a Hedgehog House'.
We were amazed by the response and had some fantastic entries.
This Wednesday at 6.30pm the GSPCA is holding a Volunteer Induction Evening at the Shelter.
Every 6 to 8 weeks we hold Volunteer Induction Evenings where if you are interested in helping at the GSPCA fund raise, walk dogs, gardening, muck out, on reception or in any role we tell you all about the Shelter, our work, go through an induction in working safely and finish off with a chat about getting you started and setting a date.
On Wednesday Sarah Creasey the GSPCA Education and Welfare Officer will run through the induction which takes around 90 minutes.
The first phase of the long awaited Animal Welfare (Guernsey) Ordinance 2012 will come into effect on 1st July 2014, replacing a number of pieces of legislation that have provided protection in the past.
The initial phase will introduce the new principle of a ‘duty of care’ to all animals. This is based on the five freedoms which before now have been used as guidance for Welfare Charities but will now be a legal requirement of all pet owners.
The five freedoms are:
The GSPCA would like to say a huge thank you to the staff and team at the Homemaker Co-op store in St Sampsons.
On Sunday the Homemaker staff made cakes, dressed up as Giant Animal Mascots and ran a Car Boot Sale to raise funds for the GSPCA.
There was face painting and lots of cars attended the event on what was a very sunny day.
The GSPCA attended and sold a variety of goods including their own van boot full of goods on sale.
A grand total of £369.53 was raised and the GSPCA are extremely grateful to Homemaker Co-op and all that supported.
