Stow away gecko furthest travelled hitch hiker arrives in #GSPCAPurpleWeek

Submitted by Steve on 23:43, 15th Feb, 2022 | 0

On Sunday morning the GSPCA received a very unusual little arrival.

For 149 years we have been helping animals and some from far further than our shores.

In 2020 just before the first lock down an Indian gecko arrived having stowed away in a bag from India who was named Mr Patel and went into a new home after following quarantine procedures.

On Sunday we had an arrival that travelled even further. A family on their return to Guernsey while unpacking discovered a tiny little Pacific gecko who had journeyed well over 8000km.

On 11th February, 1873, a meeting was convened in the rooms of the Societe Guernesiaise “for the purpose of considering the expediency of establishing in the Island a Societe for the suppression of Cruelty to Animals” and the Dean of Guernsey was called to the Chair. The Patron of the Society was His Excellency Lt. General Froome.

A Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was thus established on the 14th February 1873 and became known as the GSPCA.

The GSPCA help 1000’s of cats every year in many ways from strays to those neglected.

When we have room we not only help island cats but we help animals from Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH) which is an organisation made up of over 160 charities across the UK and Ireland.

Last October GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne brought 5 cats back from the RSPCA in Wales.

Three of the 5 were a multiple cat household.

Autism Guernsey and the GSPCA are delighted to be working together to bring a Puffin Parade to Guernsey in 2023.

Both charities are looking for businesses to sponsor a puffin and artists to decorate them.  This is a real community project and we invite groups, schools, individuals and professional artists to join in this initiative and paint a puffin.

DORA'S STORY - Dora the explorer home safe and sound

Submitted by Steve on 18:01, 25th Jan, 2022 | 0

On Thursday 13th January 2022 Dora a medium sized cross breed dog managed to escape and decided to go for bit of a walk about.

Dora was originally lost near Amherst School.

From there she went on bit of an adventure and evaded being caught for nearly two weeks.

The GSPCA had many reports in many Parishes and we know she seemed to enjoy her time in St Andrews and Castel where we believe she was for much of the time she was missing.

We were pretty confident she was between Talbot Valley and Beaucamps for much of the last few days she was stray.

The GSPCA couldn’t achieve so much without our dedicated trained staff and we currently recruiting for staff, especially for those available during weekends and bank holidays.

It is preferable if applicants have a driving licence, but not necessarily essential at this time.
