Owners of dogs in Guernsey are required to buy a licence from their parish authority for each dog they own.
Dog Tax is payable annually at a rate of £10.00 per dog and is renewable each January by 31st of the month.
Tax is due for all dogs over the age of 6 months - the only exceptions being dogs kept solely by a deaf or disabled person for their hearing or guidance (e.g. guide dogs for the blind or hearing dogs for the deaf).
The GSPCA team and all the animals would like to wish one and all a Happy New Year.
Unfortunately the New Year and the bad weather over the last few days has certainly not helped many of our feathered friends.
New Years Day Ambulance Collection Officer spent much of the day rescuing injured birds around Guernsey.
These included a Gannet that is now named Balthazar. Balthazar was rescued by ACO Geoff George after being found exhausted and thin near Kings Mill.
Fluke and Barney are two dogs at the GSPCA who are not only needing new and loving homes but both require operations.
Fluke a Jack Russell needs an operation on his leg and Barney a Collie Cross needs a lump removed.
We are hoping to get both dogs in for their operations before Christmas and we are appealing for funds towards their care.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'Barney and Fluke are two lovely dogs and we are appealing to anyone that would like to help towards their operations.'
Below is a list of opening times for the GSPCA.
Please remember that in the case of an emergency, sick, injured or stray animal(s) please call 01481 257261 and choose the 24 hour emergency option.
The GSPCA officially stop rehoming on the 15th December until the 2nd January but some animals may be suitable during these periods. The GSPCA do not believe in pets as presents and each home is looked at individually, as is the pet.
After the recent cases of animal cruelty this week we would like to remind everyone of the GSPCA cruelty complaint procedure.
Lorna Prince Welfare Manager said 'If anyone has information of cruelty or neglect to any animal we would ask them to contact the GSPCA on 01481 257261.'
'We receive and have reported hundreds of cases of cruelty or neglect every year and these recent incidents have really concerned everyone here at the GSPCA.'
Guernsey Police can confirm that following an investigation involving the killing of a sheep overnight on the 10th December 2013 an 18 year old local male has been charged with offences under The Protection of Animals Ordinance and with a further offence of criminal damage.
He has been released on conditional bail and is due to appear in Guernsey Magistrates Court on the 23rd December 2013.
The other two people arrested have been bailed pending a decision from the Children’s Convener.
