Submitted by GSPCA on 13:20, 21st Feb, 2014 | 0

At the GSPCA we have had the busiest start to a year with seals and seabirds than the team can remember.

Currently we have 14 guillemots, 1 gannet and 2 seal pups at the Animal Shelter.

As you can imagine they are eating a healthy amount of fish and we really need your support.

From sandeels to sprats, herring and mackerel each animal is eating large numbers to help with their recuperation.

You can donate online through our Just Giving Page, by calling 01481 257261, by post or by popping into the Shelter in St Andrews.

In April 2014 Daz Carre will be running the Marathon Des Sables, a 155 mile run through the Sahara Desert which takes place in 100 degree temperatures. This is pretty extreme.

He'll be doing this for the Specsavers Children's Charity and the GSPCA and The Tav has decided to help him out in his fund raising efforts by throwing a party for him - after all, we might not see him again!

Warning about e-cigarettes and dangers to pets from the GSPCA

Submitted by GSPCA on 10:10, 20th Feb, 2014 | 0

Following reports that a puppy in Cornwall has died after biting into an e-cigarette refill, vets are warning pet owners to ensure they are kept out of reach of animals.

British Veterinary Association (BVA) President and vet Robin Hargreaves has said 'This is a tragic case and very worrying when you consider how many people are now using e-cigarettes. Nicotine poisoning acts very quickly and can be fatal, especially when large doses are involved.'

Volunteers Needed - With many injured & dead seabirds the Environment Dept is co-ordinating a count this Saturday 22nd February

Submitted by GSPCA on 10:59, 19th Feb, 2014 | 0

Around the Channel Islands with the continued bad weather many of our seabirds have been injured and even perished.

Volunteers are urgently sought to collect bird bodies from beaches around the island on Saturday afternoon and take them to a collection centre at Cobo car park, opposite Le Guet, between 15:00 and 18:00.   Handwashing facilities/toilets will be available.

We also need bird experts who would be willing to identify birds brought to Cobo.
