On Thursday last week the GSPCA were called out to rescue a Little Egret in St Sampsons.

Porridge as the pretty white bird is called is believed to be a young bird that could not fly.  He was found in the grounds of the prison and is recuperating at the Shelter.

Over the weekend we tried a release but Porridge decided he wasn't quite fit enough to go.

At the GSPCA we hold Volunteer Induction Evenings every 6 to 8 weeks but with the Summer upon us and many willing volunteers over 14 wanting to help at the Shelter and those under 14 able to help at the many fund raisers we are at we held an afternoon induction session yesterday where we greeted 11 new volunteers to the team.

We really couldn't achieve all of the fantastic work we carry out at the GSPCA without the wonderful volunteer team we have at the GSPCA and we really do appreciate each and every one.

Hedgehog & Hoglet Happy Endings in Guernsey

Submitted by Steve on 21:38, 22nd Jul, 2014 | 0

On Friday the 11th July and Friday the 18th July the GSPCA had two fantastic happy endings.

The first starts on the 3rd May this year when an unwell hedgehog was brought into the GSPCA that had been out in the day.

With a few health issues on entry the female hedgehog named Brie gave birth to Edam, Feta and Babybell only days after arriving.

After weeks of care the mother and her babies which were found in St Peter Port were released very close to where they were found in a safe area.

Only days after the GSPCA warn about fishing waste, another bird dies due to a fish hook

Submitted by Steve on 20:02, 22nd Jul, 2014 | 0

Last week at the GSPCA we issued a warning on waste and rubbish injuring animals, especially those at sea.

On Sunday the GSPCA were called out to an injured gannet at Port Soif.

Emma Trousdale from the GSPCA responded in the ambulance to rescue a gannet that had a fish hook through her eye.

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said "We rescue and help animals 24 hours a day 7 days a week, but the gannet rescued on Sunday must have been in a great deal of pain and it is hard to say how long the fish hook had been through the eye."

Hot Cars Kill Dogs - As the hot weather continues please think of your pets

Submitted by Steve on 14:04, 22nd Jul, 2014 | 0

With another sunny week ahead of us the GSPCA want to ensure all pet owners take care of their animals.

The GSPCA during hot weather always receive reports from concerned members of the public that have seen dogs locked in cars and other animals in glass houses.

With the warm weather and direct sunlight, dogs in cars are potentially in a situation where you could kill your pet if it is left, regardless of the situation.
