This Wednesday at 6.30pm the GSPCA is holding a Volunteer Induction Evening at the Shelter.
Every 6 to 8 weeks we hold Volunteer Induction Evenings where if you are interested in helping at the GSPCA fund raise, walk dogs, gardening, muck out, on reception or in any role we tell you all about the Shelter, our work, go through an induction in working safely and finish off with a chat about getting you started and setting a date.
On Wednesday Sarah Creasey the GSPCA Education and Welfare Officer will run through the induction which takes around 90 minutes.
The first phase of the long awaited Animal Welfare (Guernsey) Ordinance 2012 will come into effect on 1st July 2014, replacing a number of pieces of legislation that have provided protection in the past.
The initial phase will introduce the new principle of a ‘duty of care’ to all animals. This is based on the five freedoms which before now have been used as guidance for Welfare Charities but will now be a legal requirement of all pet owners.
The five freedoms are:

On Saturday the GSPCA and Grow Ltd teamed up to put on a BBQ and fun day at the Grow Ltd site in St Sampsons.
With RSPCA Freedom Food and a veggie selection, home made cakes, animals to see, games and of course a huge plant sale, the day kicked off at 10am and the team from Grow and the GSPCA had a wonderful day with the many visitors that popped in.
Earlier today the GSPCA were called out to a cat that had been trapped in a bunker out at Pleinmont.
With a very small gap and no entrance the GSPCA tried calling a number other agencies, departments and groups to see what could be done.
Also at the Shelter a long grasper was constructed and in the second phase of the rescue additional staff were deployed to assist Geoff George the GSPCA Animal Collection Officer.
Do remember Rose the hedgehog?
Rose is one of many hedgehogs that we have had in recently to be injured by gardening equipment.
After a long process of rehabilitation and care since arriving in April Rose is now back to health and fit enough to be released.
Sadly due to her injuries to her head many of her spines haven't grown back, so a lovely home with an enclosed garden was found and Rose left the Shelter last Friday.
When Rose went to her new home we equipped Mr & Mrs Herring with a wildlife camera to see how she got on in her new home.
Next Friday June 27th is Bring Your Dog to Work Day.
Having a dog in the room can make human colleagues more cooperative, reduce stress, increase job satisfaction and productivity.
When adopting a dog or any animal from the GSPCA we often ask how many hours potential owners may be at work. Perhaps the question should actually be - are you able to take your dog to work?
Discussing the benefits of taking a dog to work might just result in a match with a dog we have in for homing.
With the sunny weather and gardens blooming the GSPCA have had a busy few weeks with injured wildlife found in areas that have been strimmed or cut.
The main casualty have been hedgehogs and even mothers with young that have been found whilst an area has been cleared or cut.
Over recent years we have seen a decrease in feral cat colonies thanks to the work of the GSPCA and that of Guernsey Animal Aid Cats, but it only takes one unnetuered female cat and one male to result in a litter of kittens.
