Members and supporters started to arrive for the 135th GSPCA AGM just after 7pm at the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.
After some refreshments John Knight GSPCA President and local Vet opened the meeting and welcomed everyone for coming along, which was followed by a number of apologies from those wanting to attend but unable due to a variety of reasons.
Then a number of reports were given and some of the highlights included.
Today is not only St Davids Day, it is also Shrove Tuesday also known to many as Pancake Day and many of us will shopping for our ingredients. The GSPCA would like to remind everyone to think of the produce that you are going to use and please look to buy Animal Welfare friendly products such as free range eggs.
Although the EU legislation has forced many battery farms to improve their standards, chickens that live as free range birds have a much better quality of life.
All year round the GSPCA help hedgehogs as they struggle to hibernate due to our mild winter temperatures.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Hedgehogs need the temperature to drop below 5c before they really go into hibernation.”
“As Guernsey experiences such mild winters hedgehogs don’t really hibernate like they do in other parts of the UK and world.”
“This means they have to find food and all they require even through the stormy weather we have recently experienced.”
Earl the Quail has been helping us to celebrate #GSPCAPurpleWeek
He is a wonderful male Japanese Quail but we would love to find him anew home despite being one of our longest ever residents as he arrived as a stray in January 2019.

All this week the GSPCA and islanders have been celebrating 149 years during our #GSPCAPurpleWeek
One of our amazing volunteers has been making delicious cupcakes for the team and help raise funds which included gluten free options.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Its been a fantastic week celebrating 149 years of the GSPCA with our #GSPCAPurpleWeek.”
The #GSPCAPurpleWeek is all about celebrating 149 years of the GSPCA.
Our mission back then remains as strong today in being –
The fourth point and embedded in all we do in caring and education and a key part of this is the next generation.
This week has been a busy week for oiled birds due to the stormy weather.
This week despite the GSPCA celebrating 149 years and #GSPCAPurpleWeek the high winds and rough seas have caused many sick, injured and even oiled sea birds.

Once again the Bailiwick has high winds and weather that puts our animals and wildlife at risk.
Often during the winter months with the high winds and stormy weather makes it difficult for wild animals and birds to feed and rest.
With the high winds we have to ensure our pets and animals kept outside are safe and secure.
Once again GSPCA are asking those that live around and visit our coast to please watch out for injured animals in need as well as seal pups which can get separated from their mothers at this time of year especially when we see bad weather.
On Sunday morning the GSPCA received a very unusual little arrival.
For 149 years we have been helping animals and some from far further than our shores.
In 2020 just before the first lock down an Indian gecko arrived having stowed away in a bag from India who was named Mr Patel and went into a new home after following quarantine procedures.
On Sunday we had an arrival that travelled even further. A family on their return to Guernsey while unpacking discovered a tiny little Pacific gecko who had journeyed well over 8000km.
