After more than 2 years the GSPCA has the first Volunteer Induction Evening planned on Thursday 26th May at the GSPCA in St Andrews starting at 630pm.
The volunteer age from this induction will be from 16 years and up and we have opportunities in all parts of our activities here at the GSPCA.
The evening will start with introductions followed by an induction into our work, the opportunities and cover all aspects of health and safety to enable the new volunteers to understand the operations and what we do at the GSPCA.
On Wednesday 11th May the GSPCA will hold their first Dog First Aid Course of 2022.
Taking the course will be GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne who has over 25 years working in the field of animal rescue and with over 3000 animals through the doors every year at the GSPCA the team see cases of animal first aid on a daily basis here in Guernsey.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We recently held a Cat First Aid Course and next month we will hold our the first Dog First Aid Course of 2022.”
On the 9th February the GSPCA rescued an oiled Puffin from Lihou, also two oiled Guillemots one called Valentine on the 14th February from Fort George and Tara from Portinfer Clay Pigeon on the 12th February.
With the three birds having been fully rehabilitated a trip today was taken to the back of Herm past Shell Beach to Puffin Bay thanks to Island Rib Voyages
At the GSPCA we help 1000’s of animals every year, but we have seen a drop in numbers of dogs and cats needing our help find homes locally, although we do help them in many other ways.
In recent years we have been trying to help animals from UK and Irish SPCA animal shelters and Association of Dog and Cat Home members, but with the Covid Pandemic this has been very difficult.
We are very lucky that most of Guernsey's beaches are dog friendly during the summer months. Saying this dogs are banned between 1st May and 30th September on the following –
Fermain
Petit Bot
L'Erée
Vazon (Northern end)
Cobo
Port Soif
L'Ancresse
Pembroke
Dogs are not permitted on Lihou Island and Lihou causeway all year round.
At the GSPCA we are extremely busy with the daily arrival Spring baby birds needing hand rearing that have been found or rescued.
Baby birds are always where possible best left in the wild to be rehabilitated by their parents.
Yvonne Chauvel GSPCA Animal Care Supervisor said “With the mild weather and start of Spring we are fast filling with baby birds.”
“We’ve had a lot of ducking, baby doves, robin chick, young blackbirds and a variety of others.”
