It’s been a very busy year for grey seal pups and finally the last two Guernsey pups are ready for the wild.
It is planned to release Mambo and Hannah sometime next week and preparations are currently underway.
Once again we are looking to release both locally rescued pups on Jethou as we did for Sealia and Gully back in May.
All seal pups were extremely emaciated and would have likely perished if they hadn’t of been rescued which include two from Jersey.
After months of care and 3 already released to the wild the 3 remaining seals are on the final stretch to the next part of their journey and life.
Having released Marty back in Jersey as well as Gully and Sealia on Jethou recently we now only have Hannah, Mambo and Andy left in our care.
Hannah and Mambo are doing incredibly well but need their final feeds of herring and mackerel and all donations of fresh fish or towards fish are hugely appreciated to fatten them up before their release very soon.
After months of care and with good weather on our site the GSPCA released Marty the Jersey seal pup back in the wild today and it was without doubt one of the best releases ever for the GSPCA team.
This Winter has been exceptionally busy for seal pups at the GSPCA as up until this morning we have had 6 in our care but thanks to a lovely Jersey family and their boat Marty is now back in the wild.
Marty arrived at the GSPCA on the 17th December just a week before Christmas last year weighing just 18kg when he should have been 40kg.
After months of care and with good weather on our side the GSPCA plan to release Marty the seal pup back in the wild tomorrow.
With six seal pups the GSPCA have been the busiest it has ever been looking after what were all starving animals close to death when they were first rescued and we are delighted to announce the first is now ready to be returned to the wild.
Today is #InternationalSealDay and with our 6 seal pups at the GSPCA we really need your support.
We currently have an Urgent Fish appeal to help our seal pups for ideally mackerel or herring but any sea fish that has been caught in the last 3 months would be hugely appreciated.
Eating at least 20-30 fish each per day we are going through over 150 fish a day and with the recent rough weather many fishermen that support us have been unable to go out.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Today is #InternationalSealDay and at the GSPCA we have 6 currently in our care.”
We are pleased to report that all six seal pups are doing well and improving daily.
In fact when there is a break in the weather we are hoping to release Marty the grey seal pup back in Jersey where he was rescued.
The weather however is playing havoc with the fresh fish we require for the seal pups and despite deliveries in bulk with the sustained bad weather we have had recently our stock is starting to run low.
The GSPCA is currently appealing for fish caught in the last 3 months, ideally herring or mackerel but any whole sea fish would be much appreciated.
Today has been a very busy day as a second poorly seal pup from Jersey has arrived at the GSPCA.
Marty as he has been named was rescued by the Jersey British Divers Marine Life Rescue yesterday on Green Island beach.
He spent the night at New Era Vets and was transported kindly by Blue Islands from Jersey to Guernsey.
He is only 18kgs and appears much older than Andrew that arrived last month form Jersey. Despite being 6 to 8 weeks of age he has a number of ailments from a chest infection to his emaciated condition.
Last week Andrew the Jersey Grey Seal Pup was rescued and transported to the GSPCA.
At only 17kgs and less than a week old this very pretty young seal pup should have still been with his mum and not in the emaciated condition as he was found.
Andrew has a very bad chest infection and desperately underweight and has been receiving care around the clock day and night.
This lunch time the youngest grey seal pup to arrive at the GSPCA in many years arrived from Jersey.
Andrew as the pup has been named still has his white fluffy coat which is lost at 14 days of age, making him around 7-12 days old and at only 17kg he is painfully thin.
New marine mammal medic Martine Venton-Heys who helped with the rescue in Jersey yesterday accompanied Andrew who is being shown around the GSPCA while she waits for her flight back to Jersey thanks to Blue Island who helped provide the transport needed.
On Friday 20th July the GSPCA team welcomed three of the team from Guernsey’s larger sister island Jersey from their animal welfare charity.
JSPCA staff Lucinda, Babs and Kari were greeted at Guernsey airport in the early hours by GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne who spent the day talking to the visitors and showing them the work, projects and plans for the future for the GSPCA.
The staff from Jersey got to meet members of the GSPCA team from volunteers to staff, work experience to trustees and had a through behind the scenes tour.
