Last night we held our 12th volunteer induction and greeted 23 new helpful faces eager to help the animals and work of the GSPCA.
This year alone we have now inducted 170 new volunteers, placements and work through these inductions and are graced with an average 120 volunteers each week but with over 500 animals in our care there is always plenty to do.
Many may think the fireworks are over but there are additional displays planned for tonight.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Last night we had a number of stray dogs and injured wild animals we helped.”
“We have also had a number of calls and messages from those concerned about their animals distressed from the loud bangs, flashes and vibrations from the fireworks and with more planned this evening the GSPCA wanted to pre-warn all pet owners ahead of these displays.”
On Monday the 12th November we hold our next dog first aid course at the GSPCA with a focus on helping save your dogs life.
Taking the course will be GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne who has over 20 years working in the field of animal rescue and with over 3000 animals through the doors every year at the GSPCA the team see cases of animal first aid on a daily basis here in Guernsey.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We have been running dog and cat first aid courses for over four years and have trained over 200 participants to help save animals lives.”
These inspirational awards provide an opportunity to recognise the dedication and commitment of our nation's staff and volunteers who go to great lengths to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals in need.
Please support us or a valued member of our team in our efforts to improve animal welfare and find pets forever homes.
All nominations are anonymous and all nominees will receive a certificate to proudly display.
The GSPCA have a limited numbers left of Purple Poppies on sale at our front desk.
Organised by Jeanne Gathercole and Linda Laine , who both adore animals who are asking the community to ‘Please wear your purple poppy alongside your red poppy’.
The purple poppies were kindly made by some members of the St Martins WI group who meet at Pat Pursey’s west coast home to knit and natter.
Sam Reach and her mum, Valerie who lives in France but loves animals also wanted to lend their support and helped with knitting and assembly of the purple poppies.
Christmas Lottery Tickets are now available from at the GSPCA at a cost of £3 per ticket under the revamped lottery.
The jackpot will continue to be a climbing prize, based on the number of tickets sold, but it starts at a guaranteed minimum first prize of £500,000.
In total the prize fund for the 2018 Lottery is larger than in previous years, starting at £3.3million, with the overall prize fund growing as well as the jackpot until the draw on Thursday 20th December.
On Saturday 13th October 2018, Scouts from the 3rd St. Martins Cub Scout group came to the GSPCA to help out at the Shelter and gain hours towards their badges in Community Impact, Environmental Conservation and World Challenge awards.
The 9 Scouts, guided by parent volunteers, were able to give a good tidy both the GSPCA Memorial Garden and the Poison Garden and duck pond walkway of leaves and weeds.
We are fast approaching the firework season where the GSPCA helps more animals scared and injured by bonfires and loud noises than any other time of year.
Every year we hear of firework related incidents involving animals and children. While fireworks may be exciting and pretty to look at and its fun to celebrate many celebrations with a bang, we must put our safety, the safety of our pets and the local wildlife first
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager “Every year we are called out and help stray dogs to hedgehogs caught in bonfires over the firework period.”
