The Floral Guernsey Annual Awards Presentation and Dinner was held at Les Cotils on 6th September 2018 where there were two entries this year which were Sark and St. Saviour.
St Andrews Floral Group who have been hugely helpful in improving the grounds at the GSPCA and won Gold at the 2017 awards had taken 2018 off from the awards for the Parish but have continued hard working around the Parish and headed up by Ann Wragg at the GSPCA.
Over a year ago the GSPCA were approached by the Sarnia Guinea Pig Rescue to help with what turned out to be more than 80 guinea pigs all of which required treatment.
Sadly the guinea pigs had an outbreak of ringworm which is a zoonotic disease so all of the guinea pigs needed isolation, protective clothing to care for them and months of treatment.
Tomorrow between 10am and 5pm GSPCA volunteers will be at le Friquet Garden Centre selling raffle tickets with a top prize of £1000.
All funds raised will be helping the 500+ animals at the GSPCA as all prizes have been kindly donated.
Tickets are just £1 each and are also on sale at the GSPCA.
If you can help tomorrow please pop along on the day or call Michelle on 257261 or email [email protected]
The GSPCA team were devastated this week on hearing of the very sad death of Marina the lion cub who stayed at the GSPCA back in 2008.
Although many of the team didn’t get a chance to meet the lion cubs that came into the care of the GSPCA back in 2008, their pictures remain on the wall and the story of their journey is often spoke of.
Lorna Prince Animal Welfare Manager who helped care for the lion cubs said “We were sad to learn this week that Marina, one of the two lion cubs that spent time at the GSPCA, had to be put to sleep due to ill health.”
Last month the wonderful staff from The Travel Corporation held a bake off to raise funds for the GSPCA.
The The Travel Corporation team are amazing supporters of the GSPCA giving up days in the office to help at the Shelter to being part of our Build Partner sponsorship scheme which helped build our multi purpose animal welfare building.
This week 2 young Swallows were returned back to the wild.
Donald and Lucky the Second arrived at the Shelter as extremely young birds having been found at a stables in St Saviours on the 11th August.
After nearly 4 weeks of care primarily by Senior Animal Care Assistant Yvonne Chauvel and Animal Care Assistant Beckie Bailey the young birds were ready to release to the wild and on Tuesday Beckie popped in on her day off to take them back to where they belonged before what will be an epic migration.
Last month two of the GSPCA staff had the opportunity to spend time at three RSPCA centres namely Stubbington Ark, West Hatch and Ashley Heath.
They started their trip on the overnight ferry which in the morning meant a short drive to the RSPCA Stubbington Ark in Portsmouth where they spent a full day in one of the largest RSPCA centre’s in the UK.
Day 2, 3 and 4 was spent at RSPCA West Hatch in Taunton where they have a Domestic and separate Wildlife Centre and Seb and Beckie got to spend time in both working with the staff, volunteers and many animals.
Tonight at 6.30pm we hold our tenth volunteer induction of 2018 and we have inducted through these alone 118 new volunteers, placements and work experience since the start of the year.
All are welcome to the induction although for those wanting to help onsite at the Shelter the minimum age is 13.
For volunteers under 13 we have a huge amount of events taking place which they can help at with a parent or guardian.
