Isabelle Vets recently announced the winner of the Isabelle Vets Pet Hero competition which was Catrina the tabby cat, as voted for by the general public.
All of the nominated finalists were ‘Heros’ in their own right, with over five hundred people voting for their chosen hero in a closely-run competition. On a small Island such as Guernsey, this truly shows the kindness and enthusiasm of people, in taking the time to recognise the bravery of all of these stoic pets.
Last Monday we held our third volunteer induction of 2018 and welcomed 5 new volunteers at the GSPCA taking this years total to 46 new volunteers inducted.
Chau Yu, Julia, Maddi, Alex and Michele all arrived for 630pm where they learnt all about the work at the GSPCA and how to work safely as a volunteer.
The event took place with GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne who after their induction spoke with each of them and set a date to start with the youngest starting from 13 which is the minimum age to help with the animals on site at the Shelter.
The GSPCA have planned out the dates for 2018 Volunteer Inductions and the third takes place tonight at 6.30pm at the GSPCA in St Andrews.
The induction will take place with GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne who will greet the new volunteers and then show a video about who we are, what we do, the ways volunteers can help and an induction of how to help safely to all the new volunteers who need to be aged from 13 years upwards to help with the animals on site.
Each March around the world rescues celebrate and promote Adopt a Rescue Guinea Pig Month.
March last year we had none at the Shelter looking for homes but this year we have 14 currently in our care.
All 14 are males and two are awaiting their homes, which are Cassiopeia and Alfie.
The 12 currently in need of a loving new owner are Yertle, Terrific Whatzit, Raphael, Mudface, Morla, Moriarty, Michelangelo, Mack, Filimore, Filigree, Donatello and Alderman Ptolemy.
Like many emergency services the snow and ice has meant work as usual at the GSPCA.
With over 500 animals in our care, the team all made it in again today to look after the animals, answer the phone, open the shop and rescue those in need 24/7 like the stray canary that has just arrived and soon to be returned to his owner.
Today Thursday 1st March the GSPCA services and our shop/reception are open as normal but with the temperatures to drop later we may consider closing at 4pm our front reception, shop, viewing and charity shop.
The plan for tomorrow Friday 2nd March is to open as normal that being the GSPCA Shop, Charity Shop (although normal access has may be diverted to avoid the slope) and Reception from 9am to 5pm, with visiting to animal viewing areas (which are limited) 11am to 430pm.
We are currently monitoring the weather and will update as and when we can.
From all of the dragons, doves, animals and team at the GSPCA a Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus and Happy St Davids Day.
On the 1st March St Davids Day is celebrated who is the patron Saint of Wales where the Dragon is on their national flag and the dove is his emblem.
The GSPCA currently has a number of Dragons and Doves in need of loving new homes.
Two of the Dragons are Newt and Pickett which came in very thin.
Last year Guernsey saw its first ever prosecution of cruelty to a Bearded Dragon called 'Nellie' who is now well and lives at the GSPCA.
All services and our shop/reception have been open today as normal but with the temperatures about to drop we are closing our front reception, shop and charity shop at 4pm.

We continue to operate our 24 hour emergency service.
Today the GSPCA have been battling with burst pipes as the cold weather continues with the extremely icy weather.
At present two outside pipes have suffered due to the elements and the team are braced for potential further problems.
The GSPCA have been at the current site for 89 years this year and some of the buildings and services date back to the 1940’s.
The GSPCA team have been busy making safe the icy and snowy patches around the Shelter for the team and visitors to move around site and care for the animals.
All services and our shop/reception are open today as normal.
This means the GSPCA Shop, Charity Shop (although normal access has been diverted to avoid the slope) and Reception are open 9am to 5pm, with visiting to animal viewing areas (which are limited) 11am to 430pm.
We may close our shop and reception early but we are currently monitoring the weather.
