Each Halloween you need to consider your pets’ safety and welfare both inside and outside the home and the GSPCA has put this advice page together to help islanders and animals.

Your pet has many challenges with trick-or-treaters, fireworks, bonfires, and all the sweet treats around over the next two weeks.

The coming days can be very stressful to your pets, including fireworks or bonfires and here are a few tips to help your pet over the coming days.

National Black Cat Day - could you help one of our many black cats find its lucky forever home this Halloween

Submitted by Steve on 08:54, 27th Oct, 2016 | 0

Black cats have had a mixed reaction for centuries with many people believing them a bad omen even in 2016.

Despite each year at the GSPCA and many other charities promoting black cats in need of homes they continue to be the main colour of cat that is often skipped by when new adoptees are looking to adopt a cat.

Today is National Black Cat Day, a day to raise awareness of the many black and white cats waiting for homes in rehoming centres.

This is the first stray stick insect we have had on record at the GSPCA and we are currently appealing for anyone who has lost their pet insect to get in touch.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "We help stray dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and other pets on a daily basis at the GSPCA but to have a stray stick insect being found and brought in is unique."

Stray budgie found on Collings Road now at the GSPCA

Submitted by Steve on 22:51, 25th Oct, 2016 | 0

Yesterday a stray yellow and white female budgie was found on Collings Road and is now at the GSPCA.

Each year we help dozens of stray pet parakeets, parrots and finches at the GSPCA.

We now have two stray budgies in our care as just over a week ago a blue stray budgie was found on Ruette De Saumarez.

Sadly we rarely find the owners of the smaller birds and we are currently appealing for any information if you know of anyone that has lost a stray budgie.

The GSPCA would like to say a huge thank you to all that attended, supported and organised the Quiz Night at the Plough Inn on Sunday.

A fantastic £150 was raised through the quiz and raffle and for the eight teams that took part their were GSPCA certificates for first place, second, third and last place for trying.

In first place and winning the quiz was the Tequila Mockingbirds team winning the GSPCA charity quiz.

To win the quiz they had to answer an animal round, all about the 80's, capital cities, oceans and islands, name the pop artist and food and drink.

FIREWORK ADVICE from the GSPCA and calendar of displays

Submitted by Steve on 14:47, 20th Oct, 2016 | 0

Every year we hear of firework related incidents involving animals and children. While fireworks may be exciting and pretty to look at and its fun to celebrate Guy Fawkes with a bang, we must put our safety and the safety of our pets and the local wildlife first.  Over the coming weeks our Animal Welfare Team will be visiting islands’ schools in an effort to promote the Fire work code and advise people how to keep themselves and their animals safe.

Lorna Prince GSPCA Welfare Manager said "Fireworks this year are being sold between 28th October and 5th November."
