Tomorrow is not only Valentines day but also the GSPCA is celebrating 140 years caring for animals in Guernsey.
Since being founded in 1873 we have helped care for, rescue, rehabilitate, reunite, release and rehome hundreds of thousands of animals and birds from domestic to wildlife, farm to working and our core beliefs of education and promoting animal welfare are as strong now as they were all those years ago.
Laurel and Hardy are two cockerels at the GSPCA in need of a new home and they are asking everyone to please choose free range eggs for your pancakes.
As a consumer you have the power to help improve animals lives. The GSPCA believes in the five freedoms for all animals and by choosing free range eggs you can help the welfare of these birds.
Do you know of any extraordinary animals and the people who dedicate their lives to them? ITV have a brand new programme to celebrate these animals and people and they need you help.
The Awards will be filmed in front of a live studio audience with winners voted for by both the public and a respected group of animal experts. They need your nominations and want to hear your stories about:
At nearly 13 years of age and arrived at the Shelter last June we are pleased to announce that Abigail is now in a new home.
Abigail who was one of the older cats at the Shelter and certainly a staff favorite went to her new home on Saturday.
At the GSPCA we see animals of all sizes and ages but unfortunately the older animals are often over looked for the youngsters. At the Shelter we currently have a number of older cats looking for that loving retirement home.
After a call yesterday and a flight this morning the GSPCA received a Razorbill from Alderney which has been affected by crude oil.
Staff at Alderney Animal Welfare have cared for the bird over the last few days and done a wonderful job removing the crude oil from the its feathers after being found on the coast of Alderney. If it hadn't been for their staff this bird would certainly have perished.
We would like to thank Michelle Champion from The Good Food Group who runs Pelicans at Kings and Fillers in Smith Street for joining the GSPCA Purple Week.
Both Fillers and Pelicans at Kings now have a selection of GSPCA Counter Boxes and if you are passing please pop in to say hello to Michelle and her team and check out the GSPCA goods on offer.
In many of the locations you will see a limited edition GSPCA Pin Badge on a commemorative backing to celebrate our 140th year which are only £2 and if your business, office or school are interested please do get in touch.
Today Hanois our second grey seal pup this winter got his first swim since being rescued in one of the GSPCA Animal Shelter pools.
At only 3 to 4 months of age and having being kept warm during his rehabilitation after being found sick and injured near L'Ancresse 4 weeks ago he wasn't too keen on his first dip.
Geoff George Animal Collection Officer and main seal carer at the Shelter said 'A Bit like Jethou Bumblebee was, Hanois wasn't that keen coming out in the cold and diving in the water but once in he had a good look around.'
