Every year we hear of firework related incidents involving animals and children. While fireworks may be exciting and pretty to look at and its fun to celebrate Guy Fawkes with a bang, we must put our safety and the safety of our pets and the local wildlife first. Over the coming weeks our Animal Welfare Team will be visiting islands’ schools in an effort to promote the Fire work code and advise people how to keep themselves and their animals safe.
Lorna Prince GSPCA Welfare Manager said "Fireworks this year are being sold between 28th October and 5th November."
Due to popular demand at the GSPCA we are holding additional dog and cat first aid courses.
The dates for the first aid courses are:

Cat First Aid 6.30pm - 8.45pm Tuesday 29th November 2016 - Ref - Cat 29/11
Dates for 2017 to be confirmed
All courses are a minimum £15 donation and you must book your place by 12pm on the day of the training session.
On Saturday the GSPCA hosted two special tours for one lucky young man and one lucky young lady.
GSPCA staff Cathryn Tyrell and Teresa Mourant gave a special tour to a young man called Noah with his friends and then later on to Kellie and her friends.
Both groups had a wonderful behind the scenes tour of the GSPCA and the lucky birthday boy and girl got to get up and close with a few of the animals in our care.
After their tours each enjoyed a party on site at the GSPCA and all received a pack of goodies and a thank you certificate for visiting.
On the weekend it was reported that the Christmas lottery jackpot has reached £415,000.
The GSPCA are once again selling the Christmas Lottery Tickets at our reception desk 9am - 5pm Monday to Saturday and this year 11am to 4pm on Sundays.
Like last year the top prize increases with ticket sales and in 2015 we saw a £1.16M jackpot
With a second prize of £100,000, third prize £25,000 and Fourth prize made up of 10 prizes of £1,000 the 2016 draw will take place on Tuesday 20 December.
On Thursday last week a stray blue budgie was found on Ruette De Saumarez and is now at the GSPCA.
Each year we help dozens of stray pet parakeets, parrots and finches at the GSPCA.
Sadly we rarely find the owners of the smaller birds and we are currently appealing for any information if you know of anyone that has lost a stray budgie.
Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said "Last Thursday we helped a stray budgie which we have named 'Blu'."
This weekend our two bearded dragons Pablo and Picasoo were waved off to their forever homes.
The pair of lizards found themselves at the GSPCA as their owners could no longer care for them.
Thankfully they only arrived a couple of weeks ago and the team at the GSPCA were pleased to find them a forever home so quickly.
Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said "We've had a busy few months with stray and unwanted reptiles and it often takes months to find them new homes."
The team at the GSPCA are overjoyed to report that on Saturday Bob the diabetic cat was waved off by staff and volunteers to his forever home.
Nearly a year ago Bob was found as a very poorly grumpy stray cat which we never found his original owner.
It wasn't long before he was diagnosed with diabetes and after some time and a lot of tests both his health and temperament improved greatly during his time at the Animal Shelter.
Today The Prince's Trust TEAM programme are offering a car wash service from 12.30-2pm.
It is all happening at the Guernsey College Les Ozouets Campus (the old St Peter Port School) raising funds for GSPCA.
Last week the Prince's Trust team got a guided tour of the GSPCA and this is the first of a number of events they are organising to help raise much need funds for the animals at the Shelter and the work at the GSPCA.
They have other events planned this and next week with details coming very soon.
The Policy and Resources Committee decision not to introduce Gift Aid and Payroll Giving in the 2017 budget, following the review promised at the end of 2015 has been met with dismay by the Association of Guernsey Charities, which has been calling for change since April 2013.
Peter Rose, AGC Chairman, has indicated “this is clearly a slap in the face for local charities, and undoubtedly conflicts with the terms of the Social Compact between the States of Guernsey and the Charity sector, signed only two years ago.”
On Thursday (tomorrow at 6.30pm) we hold our thirteenth volunteer induction of 2016.
We are blessed with over 600 volunteers helping the GSPCA every year and on average over 100 every single week.
Here are full details on getting involved -
We are always looking for volunteers to help at the Shelter in a variety of roles.
