You may recall last month the GSPCA helped rescue a goldfish abandoned in a bucket being attaked by a gull.
We are delighted to report that although we had no leads to an owner we have managed to find Captain Brirdseye a new home.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager “Sadly during the 21 stray days Captain Birdseye the abandoned goldfish had to stay for at the GSPCA we did not find an owner.”
“However we are absolutely delighted that he has found a new home and was collected recently and we wanted to share the happy tail as part of the GSPCA Purple Month celebrations.”
Throughout the month of February we will be promoting the 24/7 work of the GSPCA, the animals in our care and the ways people can and do support our work.

The 14th February is our official anniversary and whether in two weeks, or any day of February there are many ways to get involved and support including our TOP 10 which are –
Are you supporting us celebrating 150 years this February with GSPCA Purple Month?
February 2023 the GSPCA celebrates 150 years since being founded and here are a few ideas to get involved with this momentous mile stone.
The celebrations all kick off on the 1st February as we were founded in the middle of the month and throughout the month we will have a very Purple theme and lots happening through the following 12 months as we will be running a range of events and celebrations and we need your help to make it an extra special month and year.
This Chinese New Year celebrates the year of the rabbit and the GSPCA are currently experiencing the highest numbers of rabbits in our care in many years.
Alex Soulsby GSPCA Animal Care Assistant said “2023 is the year of the rabbit!”
“If you’ve been considering adding rabbits to your family, or you have a single rabbit and you’re thinking about perhaps wanting to find them a friend, we have lots of rabbits looking for their forever homes.”
In the early hours of Saturday morning the GSPCA were called out to rescue a grey seal pup at Petit Bot which is now at the GSPCA.
Geoff George Head of Marine Mammals said “1230am Sunday morning we were called out to a young seal pup we have called Cleopatra who was just 18kgs.”
“Very poorly, weak dehydrated, very snotty and less than half the weight she should be.”
“She was found at Petit Bot and is needing feeding around the clock.”
Oopsie is a black cat that was found as a stray last September found covered in fleas and not in the best condition.
This lovely older cat is certainly in her late teens and requires a number of treatments at the vets.

The GSPCA in recent years has seen more rabbits needing homes than dogs or cats.
Hundreds of rabbits every year come through our doors.
Sadly many of them have issues with their teeth and one of those currently is Willow.
Willow was found as a stray last October and sadly no owner was found.
She had a very poorly eye when she arrived and after investigations she has to have a dental operation.
Today the GSPCA welcomed Mia Ogier and her parents.
Mia who goes to Brownies and is in Year 4 of Amherst School popped into the GSPCA Animal Shelter with an amazing donation for the many animals in our care.
This was all thanks to an amazing sponsored event which she did over the festive period. On the sponsor forms she wrote –
Last week a very large gold fish was rescued from a hungry gull.
The gold fish was rescued near Gibauderie and despite his injuries is doing well at the GSPCA.
Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said “We are asked to help all sorts of animals but it is rare we are asked to help a goldfish abandoned in a bucket being attacked by a gull.”
“We have named him Captain Birdseye and despite his injuries he is doing well and if we don’t find his owners in the next 3 weeks we will be looking to find him a home.”
