During mid March the GSPCA were called out to rescue a very cheeky cormorant.
Flybe as the bird was named was found in Church Square unable to fly, very thin and trying to enter buildings and shops.
He was brought to the GSPCA where we fed him up and after over a week of care we got him to a lovely release spot near the Bathing Pools.
Flybe wasn’t convinced he was ready for the wild and shortly after being released he made his way back to land and continued to pester people.
During April we run our Share the Rainbow & Pets Drawing competition and what amazing entries we had and so many.
Organised by GSPCA staff Emma Topley and judged by Beckie Bailey it was extremely difficult to judge all of the fantastic drawings.
Here are the results –

Winner – Daisy Pattimore
Runner Up – Amelia Inchley
6 – 11 years old
Winner – Abigail Dowington
Runner Up – Ines Rocha
12 to 17 years old
Winner – Steve Austin
Runner Up – Georgia Bynam
What an incredible response we have had with the Virtual Petshow with over 500 entries.
A huge thank you to all that have supported this fun, virtual event it is hugely appreciated.
Lorna Chadwick GSPCA Welfare Officer and Event Organisor said “Goodness me that took a while to judge; all of the photographs were brilliant!”
“We will post all of the entries over the next few days so everyone can see what a difficult job it has been for our two young judges.”
“Until then we are pleased to announce the winners of our Virtual Pet show and share their photographs.”
After hearing of our plea for help with fund raising for GSPCA during the Covid-19 crisis, Becky Rowe Jewellery contacted us offering to donate one of her Sterling Silver ”Luna” Unicorn Pendants.
Throughout April all that donated to GSPCA a minimum of £5.00 were put into a draw.
We had an incredible response with over 700 donations the most we have received in a month and we recently chose a winner at random and that winner was Joanna Rolfe.
Becky Rowe is supporting us once again and this time it is with a Sterling Silver “Gerry” Giraffe charm and chain.
This weekend we should have been running around organising and getting ready for our BIGGEST event of the year and we really need you to donate to help our work as we all miss this much loved postponed event by going to - https://giving.gg/donate/event/5876/GSPCA-Coronavirus-Emergency-Appeal
Sadly due to the Coronavirus Pandemic and restrictions we have had to cancel our 9th Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday.
Guy Hardill had never never swum in sea until 5 weeks ago and this coming Wednesday he plans to undertake a challenge he never thought he could do.
On the 3rd June Guy will swim the Havelet Bay circuit.
This swim includes going from the Bathing Pools to Castle, then back across red buoy, the M and back in to where he started.
To donate to show your support to his swim and to the essential work of the GSPCA please visit - https://giving.gg/donate/event/5898/Round-Havelet-Swim
We thought you might like to know a little more about our team during the current lock down due to Covid-19. Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager has asked a number of questions and to start off we meet Helen Holmes helps in so many ways and has worked at the GSPCA since May 2007.
Steve Byrne asks “Why did you want to work for the GSPCA?”
Helen Holmes “I want to work at the GSPCA not only because I love animals but want to help them in any way I can.”
Steve “What is your favourite part of working for the GSPCA?”
Only days left to get your entries into our Virtual Petshow so we can all celebrate animals in Guernsey and our pets past and present. Sadly due to the Coronavirus the GSPCA has had to postpone it's biggest Seafront event and fundraiser of the year until 2021.
Our Seafront Sunday, due to take place on Sunday May 31st is the biggest celebration of animals in Guernsey and raises much needed funds for the Shelter. This money is vital to enable us to continue with all of our essential work with companion animals and wildlife across the Islands.
