All welcome
This Saturday at the GSPCA we are having our annual Christmas celebration for all those that have done so much for animals and the community over the last year.
Dress code is Christmas themed and all staff, volunteers, friends, supporters and families are welcome to join us to celebrate all we have achieved during another busy year.
Children are also welcome and there will be lots to keep them entertained from space hoppers to tunnels to play in.
Earlier today our Animal Collection Officer and GSPCA Head of Marine Mammals Geoff George was rescued a 2-3 day old Grey seal Pup from Grandes Rocques.
The very emaciated and poorly pup was nearly a quarter of the weight he should be for his age with no mother in sight.
At only 12kgs if the pup hadn’t been rescued it would have surely perished on our West Coast.
‘Crash’ as the young pup has been named is now receiving around the clock intensive care as it will need fluids and rehydration every 2 hours 24/7 to stablise it.
With a record breaking number of hedgehogs in our care this year and over 500 animals at the moment we need you to help us help animals this Christmas.
From wildlife to domestic, those needing homes to rehabilitation there are many ways you can support our work and what a great gift helping animals in need could be for a loved one.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “With the biggest day of kindness and giving to others approaching we would love islanders to think of the many animals in our care.”
You may have seen our two recent posts on older cats desperately in need of homes and how Spud and Dexter are settling well in their forever homes.
This is Dexter one of our rare younger recent residents that as you can see is loving his wonderful new home.
It is great that we see very few kittens in need or suffering, but this does mean we don’t often have many young cats in need of homes, but we certainly have many older cats needing that special someone.
You may have just seen the story on Spud a 15 year old cat now happy in his forever home. We recently had another update from a cat called Bandit.
Anna Paint Senior Animal care Assistant said “Bandit was an 11year old cat that when he arrived needed a bit of dental work.”
“Older cats very often need very special homes which are few and far to find but after 6 months of care we found this lovely cat just the right home.”
Finding the older cats new homes in Guernsey is often a struggle and no more so than for the lovely Spud.
It took over 7 months for us to find this loving wonderful cat his forever home which we are delighted to say he is doing very well in.
Anna Paint Senior Animal care Assistant said “Spud was with us for 7 months before he went to his forever home and we are delighted to say he is doing very well and we are getting lots of updates as his new Dad is one of our wonderful volunteers.”
Many think that Guernsey hedgehogs like their cousins in the UK hibernate but sadly this is a rare occurrence for the majority of our spikey friends as they require a temperature of 5c or below for their body clock to switch to this Winter behaviour.
With the mild climate we have in the Channel Islands it is rare for a day to go by that we don’t rescue of help a hedgehog 365 days a year.
Last night we held the final animal first aid course of 2019 at the GSPCA.
The theme was Dog First Aid and the room was packed with 22 keen dog owners and interested individuals who spent the evening with GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne who has over 22 years working in the field of animal rescue and with over 3000 animals through the doors every year at the GSPCA the team see cases of animal first aid on a daily basis here in Guernsey.
This Monday 18th November we hold our last dog first aid course of 2020 at the GSPCA with a focus on helping save your dogs life.
Taking the course will be GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne who has over 22 years working in the field of animal rescue and with over 3000 animals through the doors every year at the GSPCA the team see cases of animal first aid on a daily basis here in Guernsey.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We have been running dog and cat first aid courses for over five years and have trained over 250 participants to help save animals lives.”
