GSPCA works on helping rabbits in Guernsey

Submitted by Steve on 17:12, 25th Mar, 2014 | 0

Recently concerns over numbers of unwanted and stray rabbits have been highlighted in Guernsey.

From 2012 to 2013 the GSPCA has seen an increase of 104 to 129 rabbits equating to a 24% rise.

With only 8 stray rabbits in 2012 and 9 in 2013 being reclaimed by owners, the numbers of rabbits have proved a challenge at the Shelter.

Saying this, the good news is that the Shelter has expanded the number of pens to help cope with our hopping little friends.

Submitted by Steve on 16:12, 24th Mar, 2014 | 0

Yesterday 13 new students were trained in Dog First Aid.

With thousands of dogs kept as pets around the Bailiwick, yesterday the GSPCA held the second session with 13 new dog first aiders who spent the morning learning their ABC for dogs to what to do if their dog had a seizure.

The group enjoyed not only learning about what to do, but also got a chance to meet Mickey a Basset Hound who is at the Shelter and made a very good model and let those taking part find the heart beat.

Pepe is one of the older dogs in need of that forever home at the GSPCA in Guernsey

Submitted by Steve on 17:51, 21st Mar, 2014 | 0

At the GSPCA we always have many animals in need of new homes.

Often the dogs find homes very quickly as we have a list of those looking but sometimes the older dogs are harder to find that forever home.

One of these older chaps in need is Pepe. Pepe is a lovely little dog facing many challenges as he has limited eye sight; but he can see shadows and loves people and is a spritely little man.

Submitted by Steve on 13:42, 20th Mar, 2014 | 0

The GSPCA rehomes hundreds of cats every year and help thousands more.

Sadly many of the strays and those no longer being able to be cared for by their owners come in with health problems.

Currently we have two stunning cats in need of operations.

Trio who has gone through a number of medical treatments and a very difficult start to her 2 years of life has half a back right leg which needs operating on further.

She is one of the teams favourites but before we can rehome her we have to ensure she ready and healthy.

Microchip training expand the GSPCA teams ability to chip animals in Guernsey thanks to Avid

Submitted by Steve on 18:58, 19th Mar, 2014 | 0

Yesterday the GSPCA team saw a flying visitor from Avid one of the microchip companies from the UK.

This was to train new staff for microchipping and to refresh those already with the skills to perform the implantation.

With only 40 to 45% of stray dogs and cats that arrive at the GSPCA being chipped, microchipping your pet gives them the best chance of being identified and returned to you quickly if they become lost or stolen.
