After a second spell of rough weather this year the GSPCA has already rescued 4 oiled birds so far today.
The reason we and other coastal animal charities see this increase is that crude oil that has settled on the sea bed gets stirred up and floats to the surface where the birds sadly get coated and then find it difficult to fly, preen, hunt and care for themselves.
We closely monitor the locations of where the birds are found and tidal movements in case they aren't isolated incidents.
We have a busy week ahead of us at the Shelter with the GSPCA Purple Week starting on Monday, our AGM Monday evening from 7pm, our 141st birthday on the 14th and a Dog First Aid Course on Sunday 16th February.
Is there a person or charity in Guernsey you think deserves a Petplan & ADCH Animal Charity Award?
24 hours 7 days a week staff and volunteers work to care for and rescue animals every day here in Guernsey and this is a way for them to receive national recognition.
The closing date is the 31st March 2014 but we are urging islanders if they feel that an award is earned to get their vote in as soon as possible.
We have a very special team of individuals here at the GSPCA. Both staff and volunteers work around the clock to help animals in our care and around Guernsey 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Each quarter we ask for nominations of those that have stood out amongst the team and here are the results for those nominated for Volunteer and Staff Member for Autumn/Winter 2014 -

You may remember Thumbs our life saving cat.
Thumbs towards the end of 2013 was the very cat who helped save the life of a cat that required a blood transfusion at Isabelle Vets.
We are over joyed to report that Thumbs is now in a new and loving home and without doubt is very settled and happy.
Thumbs has a fantastic new family and now has two older human brothers who are very fond of him.
Anna Paint Senior Animal Care Assistant said 'It is wonderful to see Thumbs so happy in his new home.'
Can you help us help our two seal pups Eden and Trinity?
Both seal pups are doing well and have been at the Shelter for just over two weeks since their rescues.
We have been appealing for donations of mackerel and herring and its been wonderful to see the many donations and fish to help with their care.
Since helping Eden and Trinity we have been out to visit other seal pups around the coast but thankfully they have been in a healthy condition and best left in the wild.
We would like to thank everyone that has supported our 2014 calendars so far, it really is appreciated.
As we are now very close to February we are selling the few calendars we have left for only £2 each.
Currently we have 3 styles of calendar all of which have been kindly given to the Shelter to help raise funds for animals in Guernsey.
We have the Guernsey Electricity calendar which is full of wonderful pictures from around our beautiful island.
DRESS down days at Rossborough will feed two rescued seal pups at the GSPCA for the duration of their stay.
Over a series of dress down days throughout 2013 Rossborough staff raised £743.20; the company matched this amount, bring the donation to £1,486.40.
This will cover two months’ feed, new filter pumps for the unit and the remainder will go towards updating the facility, which needs tiling and decorating.
We currently have a vacancy for a Maintenance and Grounds Assistant at the GSPCA. This is due to Ryan who has been with us in the role for nearly 2 years sadly leaving the team to move on to a new career path.
We have 21 staff at the Shelter and over 200 volunteers that not only have to care for the many animals, but we also have to look after nearly 4 acres of land, 4 vehicles and many buildings.
