Hedgehog Awareness Week runs from 2nd – 8th May this year and it aims to raise the profile of the Britain’s only spiny mammal and one of the few mammals here in Guernsey.
This year the GSPCA like the British Hedgehog Preservation Society Charity is asking people create their very own hedgehog haven and support our work with wildlife!
Once again we have been blessed with incredible weather during April, but sadly there are only days left on many beached that owners can take their dogs.
As usual from the 1st May until the 30th September the restrictions mean that dogs are not allowed on the following beaches between these dates –
Dogs are not permitted on Lihou Island and Lihou causeway all year round.
Thanks once again to the #GuernseyTogether spirit the 2021 Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday will be the tenth and takes place on Sunday 12th September.
We had planned to hold it in May but as with the reasons given for the Liberation Day celebration alterations the GSPCA have taken the decision to move from May to September.
On the 12th September 2021 10am to 4pm the GSPCA will once again be organising a day to celebrate the animals in Guernsey and all the wonderful work that is done to care for them.
Last May Hector a lovely black cat arrived at the GSPCA.
Sadly during his year we discovered a variety of health issues from diabetes to other ailments.
This meant many of the team handled this adorable chap twice a day as he required regular medications morning and night with a special diet.
Anna Paint GSPCA Senior Animal Care Assistant said “The Amazing Hector has left the building to go to his forever home.”
“He had lots of kisses, I gave him a kiss from everyone, he walked up the cattery chatting to all the cats, I’m sure he was saying goodbye.”
On Friday the team waved Charlie the cockatoo off to his new home.
Beckie Bailey GSPCA Animal Care Assistant said “We all adored our Charlie the cockatoo who went to his new forever home on Friday.”
“I had to give him a goodbye kiss before he went and he actually jumped on my shoulder today which was so sweet before he left.”
“We have lots of other birds looking for homes such as cockatiels in an outside aviary to a cockerel and Sparky the Amazon parrot.”
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It was lovely to see Charlie off to his new home on Friday.”
With Spring well underway the GSPCA are asking Islanders to please be mindful of the many fledglings popping up around the Bailiwick.
The GSPCA would like to remind that as a general rule, it is best to leave baby birds alone.
A baby bird has a greater chance of survival in the wild than it has being hand-reared by man as they learn to fend for themselves and how to forage for food by their parents.
Around 2 weeks after hatching young birds in your Bailiwick garden usually leave the nest, just before they learn how to fly.
After 10 years of service, a wonderful vehicle that was sponsored by Carey Olsen has had to retire and we are appealing for funds or a donation of a GSPCA Animal Welfare Electric Ambulance Van and Charging Point.
The GSPCA are called out to and investigate over 2000 calls or incidents of concerns of animal welfare every year 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
The GSPCA is striving to be as green as possible and we do our best for the environment and we would love to replace the retiring vehicle with a much more eco electric model and we are appealing for support.
This month staff from The International Stock exchange (TISE) are collectively travelling on foot the distance between our office locations which equates to over 3,000 miles!
The donations will support their charity of choice for 2021, the GSPCA and all funds raised will be matched by TISE.
Any donations would be very gratefully received and you can donate here: https://giving.gg/donate/event/6988/TISE-goes-walkies-in-aid-of-the-GSPCA
We thought we’d give a quick update on India, Titan and Joey the grey seal pups at the GSPCA.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We are pleased to say that India, Joey and Titan are improving daily and eating well.”
“Combined they are eating over 50 fish a day and we really need your support and to donate to their care please visit https://giving.gg/donate/event/5876/GSPCA-Coronavirus-Emergency-Appeal
Last week the GSPCA team were overjoyed to wave off the largest fish ever in our care to his new home.
Bruce at over 18 inches in length arrived at the GSPCA in March 2016 and for over 5 years we have been trying to find him a new home.
Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said “Bruce is certainly the largest fish I have cared for at the GSPCA and the biggest we have probably ever had.”
“Bruce is a Plecostomus and spends most of his time relaxing and we really hope he will adore his new home.”
