A year since the GSPCA had over 40 hamsters the Shelter has recently received another home full.
Fortunately less than quarter the number of last years incident the GSPCA is asking pet owners to take care when choosing small mammals as pets. Hamsters puberty happens from as young as 4 weeks and with a gestation period of 2 to 3 weeks and a litter size of 1 to 18 babies a home could quickly be overwhelmed.
The GSPCA and Guernsey Animal Aid receive dozens of stray animals every month. Some have collars with owners details and some are returned to owners that have left us information looking for their lost pet. Thankfully many are Microchipped so after scanning them we can quickly get them back to their owners, but not enough!
An update on Adele the Grebe that came in covered in oil from Torey Canyon last month.
We are pleased to say she is doing well and the oil has now been removed. We are caring for her until her water proofing returns before we release her to the wild. Currently having physio on one of our pools she appears to be enjoying being back on the water.

From a bunny boom to a guinea pig bonanza the Animal Shelter is now inundated with over 20 rabbits, guinea pigs and rats in need of a good home.
From strays, unwanted litters and those that cannot be cared for due to an owner’s change of circumstances or welfare reasons the Shelter is literally bursting with these little animals looking for new homes.
Just last night another stray rabbit was found wandering and we urge any owners that lose their pets to ensure they register their details with the Shelter as we have stray animals brought in every day.
Blue came into the Animal Shelter as an extremely thin stray nearly 3 months ago.
After doing a number of tests it has become apparent that the poor little fella is hyperthyroid and therefore on treatment for the rest of his life.
The vet has estimated that he is between 9 and 11 years old but it is difficult to say due to his health problems.

The razorbill which we have named Bill survived last night after coming in and is doing well in one of our intensive care units with the hook removed we are hopeful that the wound will heal.
What you can do to help to help the animals of Guernsey
Protecting pets, farm animals and wildlife from harmful rubbish is straightforward – simply dispose of your waste responsibly.
Tomorrow is Shrove Tuesday and many of us will shopping for our ingredients today. The GSPCA would like to remind everyone to think of the produce that you are going to use and please look to buy Animal Welfare friendly products such as free range eggs.
Although the EU legislation has forced many battery farms to improve their standards, chickens that live as free range birds have a much better quality of life.
