All this week for Half Term the GSPCA are running Spooky Tours and Halloween Treasure Hunts at the GSPCA.
Yesterday 15 young vampires, cats, zombies and monsters arrived for a scary event at the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.
The group on arrival were given a few gifts and got to meet Molly the beagle witch before being taken around the Shelter to find out about some of the Halloween types of animals like black cats, owls, bats and those with scary names.
Black cats have had a mixed reaction for centuries with many people believing them a bad omen even in 2016.
Despite each year at the GSPCA and many other charities promoting black cats in need of homes they continue to be the main colour of cat that is often skipped by when new adoptees are looking to adopt a cat.
Today is National Black Cat Day, a day to raise awareness of the many black and white cats waiting for homes in rehoming centres.
On Sunday a stray stick insect was found in the Villocq area of Castel and is now at the GSPCA.
This is the first stray stick insect we have had on record at the GSPCA and we are currently appealing for anyone who has lost their pet insect to get in touch.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "We help stray dogs, cats, rabbits, birds and other pets on a daily basis at the GSPCA but to have a stray stick insect being found and brought in is unique."
"The stray stick insect is doing well and we have named him Stan."
On Saturday GSPCA Animal Care Assistant Cathryn Tyrell gave a lovely birthday guided tour to Emily Bateman who was celebrating her 11th birthday with her friends at the GSPCA.
The group started the tour with Cathryn showing Emily and her friends around the Shelter where Emily as the birthday girl got special treatment and met a number of the animals in our care.
The tour took the group around the site and behind the scenes finishing with a few surprise gifts and certificates for the group and a party in our events room which can be hired out as an extra.
Yesterday a stray yellow and white female budgie was found on Collings Road and is now at the GSPCA.
Each year we help dozens of stray pet parakeets, parrots and finches at the GSPCA.
We now have two stray budgies in our care as just over a week ago a blue stray budgie was found on Ruette De Saumarez.
Sadly we rarely find the owners of the smaller birds and we are currently appealing for any information if you know of anyone that has lost a stray budgie.
Earlier this month the Prince's Trust team visited the GSPCA to see the work carried out and to see in what ways they could help at the Animal Shelter in Guernsey.
On the team were Rebekah Paduna, Graham De La Mare, James Roussel, Finley Evans, Stevie Ogier, Kallan Miller, Lawrence Ozanne and Sylvia Billien.
During the visit the group of 16 -25 year olds spoke to GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne about possible projects on site at the GSPCA and also ways they could raise funds to purchase the goods needed to carry out the work.
The GSPCA would like to say a huge thank you to all that attended, supported and organised the Quiz Night at the Plough Inn on Sunday.
A fantastic £150 was raised through the quiz and raffle and for the eight teams that took part their were GSPCA certificates for first place, second, third and last place for trying.
In first place and winning the quiz was the Tequila Mockingbirds team winning the GSPCA charity quiz.
To win the quiz they had to answer an animal round, all about the 80's, capital cities, oceans and islands, name the pop artist and food and drink.
Every year we hear of firework related incidents involving animals and children. While fireworks may be exciting and pretty to look at and its fun to celebrate Guy Fawkes with a bang, we must put our safety and the safety of our pets and the local wildlife first. Over the coming weeks our Animal Welfare Team will be visiting islands’ schools in an effort to promote the Fire work code and advise people how to keep themselves and their animals safe.
Lorna Prince GSPCA Welfare Manager said "Fireworks this year are being sold between 28th October and 5th November."
Due to popular demand at the GSPCA we are holding additional dog and cat first aid courses.
